Just a bit of a technical question here:
Is it possible (well, is the sound quality good) if you make permanent connections in audio leads? By this I mean filing jacks down & cutting the end of then dropping solde where jacks fit in and ramming the jack in while it's still hot... surely if anything this would give a better connection? It's just loose cables really annoy me and I know Gold connector ones help alleviate this (well, the poor connection crackle...), but even
they become "loose" after a while.

I wouldn't recommend it personally. It's always best to disconnect your system entirely every now and them and clean everything. Dust get's in no matter what and a build up can degrade the sound quality. Every couple of months I reconnect all my stuff and disentangle wires that somehow manage to wrap themselves into knots. Someone else may know different but in my opinion I say no.

It's just sometimes where I've got wires with "permanent" connections of size altering jacks... but still, I suppose it is handy to have loads of loose jacks & leads so you can add new equipment etc. in...

My friend has good knowledge on Hi-fi. I'll ask him when I next see him. Going to upgrade my system soon. Richer sounds here I come!

Cheers, let me know- one of my dads mates is really into hi-fi (he used to work in the industry), but I know he'd balk at the suggestion, won't even ask him :)

Asked my mate. He said it shouldn't have any adverse affect but to be very careful about the heat when soldering. He did mention that you can get lock in jacks which may serve your purpose more.

Ah, cool. Didn't know about lock in jacks. I had an idea for a 90 degree rotated one (like most headphone jacks...) with a "clasp" you could flick to lock it. Are they like I described?

I didn't know about these lock in jacks either. I think they are how you described.

Damn, another of my "inventions" that has been already made...
If only I'd been born 50 years ago, I'd of been a millionaire :(

Me and an old flatmate used to have a joke that someone in my family/friends was selling my ideas to corporations- at least 10 times I told him a really good idea for something and then 6 months down the line it'd crop up in a journal/a new product would appear that worked exactly as I said.
