Hi, anyone here dabbled in CSound?
I'm considering doing my final project when I go back to uni on music software (either a softsynth or midi scratchpad as described in my other thread). I'd like to have a dabble first before I submit my proposal so:
a) I can see it's something I like enough to put the time required in...
b) I can see it's something I am a skillfull enough programmer to do
c) I can check that there's enough scope to fulfil the criteria of an acceptable proposal.
I was wondering if Csound would be a good starting point for this?
Any advice/info appreciated...
Cheers.

Only "Smalltalk" I know was an old ZX48k program that worked on the basis of freudian self-analysis to allow you to have "conversations" with it by typing to it :)
I want to try reaktor, I've heard good things about it. Do you reckon 3 is signifiacantly better than 2?

Anyone got a .pdf of the csounds book?
Zeus: Whilst I wouldn't call myself a "programmer" I can program and this doesn't look too complex... try writing stuff in x86 machine code if you want a chalenge ;)

idont know really, but version 2 is wicked. ive made a nice little FM drummachine in 2.0 in which the sounds are triggered by hits in breakbeats that are fed into it.
I think reaktor beats stuff like Csound and SC hands down. Like people use visual programming environments for everything now, cos traditional coding is so olde-skoole now ;)

i will definetly have to check it out when i got some time over. i allready know C and C++ so i kind of hope it will be a bit easier for me to learn it.. i dont really have time for music more though. :( all my spare time SHOULD be spent coding, so when i make music i feel kind of bad..

while virtual interface programs might be more user friendly...
csound is the top of the game when it comes to synthesis.
it can do anything, there are no boundries

Hex 4E V3 R!
J-Hok: I agree that reaktor et all are a lot easier, and if you spent an equivalent amount of time on them as coding in Csound the results would be far more impressive... however, as Zeus says, the more low level you go, the better for the processor, hence more stuff at once hence no boundries.
Not knocking reaktor BTW, I like what I've hear dof it...
