Does anyone else here get dissapointed if music doesn't develope or build up? I'm asking, because many of friends don't seem to mind if their music sort of...mingles around....but I really like music that developes, maybe by parts being added, volume/key/melodic changes, or other ways.
One album I got recently was Out From Out Where by Anton Tobin, and although it is technically better than anything I could ever do, I disliked the fact that (many) tracks ended, or seemed to end the way they began.
I'm the only person who feels this way?

Oh...before any Tobin fans jump at my throat, I'd like to say I admitted it is a very well-done album, but I just used it as a personal example of many albums I've listened to that were ruined for me by the fact many of the tracks didn't build up....

hrm. it's not IDM music, but I feel this way about Meshuggah's new album... the songs are really good, don't get me wrong, but for the most part, they don't really build up or go anywhere, so that was a bit of a let down

yeah, it does depend... But speaking of music that builds up....
Jeff Buckley!! If you don't have any of his stuff, you gotta get Grace. Its brought me together with people that have completely different tastes in music.

Jeff Buckley..what style is he?
I love the surprise build ups and developements Aphex Twin does in Druqks....likewise, the way Autechre changes things over time in many of the Confield tracks....

Hmmm... that sounds disappointing. I like Chaosphere, but it kind of does the same thing.

Jeff Buckley sang and played guitar. His music sounds nothing like aphex twin or Autechre, but it is as amazing~
(some of the more poplular songs are Last Goodbye, Grace, So Real )

i have no problem with tracks that dont build up aslong as they are good. i loften like my chill/sleep music as monotonic as possible..

Hmmm....personally, I found gantz graf enjoyable but a little TOO random...I'd prefered it if they had stuck with the drum-beat-ish beggining and developed it rather than go of in some weird sound spasm, but that's probably just me, :)

okay... lets get this clear... so you want development, but godforbid, not too much..?
I think its safe to say 'random' doesn't apply to gantz graf (or indeed most of ae's music)..

What I mean, is a general theme that is deveoped on. I never said Ae's music was random, I just said I found granz graf too random. So there is the drum idea at the beggining...then, that isn't really expanded on (imo)...it just goes off into some (admittedly fun) noise.
I think Orbital are good at adding layers into their pieces till they reach a cool climax, or using other techniques (such as most of the tracks on In Sides.)

the rhythm in gantz graf is being developed i think, it's just not a regular beat anymore (i.e. listen carefully....)

I tend to like things that fall into a groove and stick to it. No builds.. just timbres and textures really..

Anton Tobin?!?!?!
AMON Tobin
:)
i like different music for different occasions. sometimes i like a build up, but sometimes i like stuff that doesnt go anywhere, and more extreme then just Amon Tobin, but like listen to some john cage. there is no harmonic movement. it doesnt have like a chorus and verse... but it creates an atmosphere, and i love that
personal preferences
