But there is already "degenracy" in what we consider attractive- pictures of 50 females shown to african tribesman were ordered in preferance almost opposite to that of white western males shown the same pictures. The tribesman found the women best equipped for survival, whereas the western males chose the most lithe, fair ones... Depends on what people term weak- unattractive, poor at surviving in a particular climate (those well equipped to deal with warmer climes wouldn't last long in the other extreme), poor genes, infertile, lack of (or not) of aggression etc. Diversity is the way nature overcomes problems... homogenisation and inbreeding only introduce more problems in the long run- a famous case is of a type of new zealand sheep, bred for 15 generations to maximise wool, they steadily got more and more "wooly" . Then around the 16th generation, they all started to have very thin fleeces. Nature "dealt" with the controlled breeding by reversing the accumulated effect. The same would happen with humans if eugenics was applied over a large enough period (500 years or so...) |

That's why the aristocracy has a reputation for insanity. All families have a mad relative locked up in the attic... There's also the argument however, that whilst diversity is good, lack of some imbreeding will lead to a single homogenised race, that would be highly susceptible to disease. The best from a survivalist's POV would be a mixture of the 2 strategies... Not saying that's a good thing tho :) |

I think instincts have been coded into the psyches (I know I am wading into meta physics even pseudo science here) checks and balances into the equation which in the long run results in evolution of societies..population etc...one way to say it would be to drop a cliche and say "let nature take course"...some people from opposite races are drawn to each other..some (more than some arent)..though there's a healthy proportion of race mixing taking place..(I am one half of one:) )..and it's on more of an increase with diminishing borders..but the homogenised race that people keep warning of is still only in the realm of Photoshoped fashion spreads..but the colour and dimensions this prototype homogenised race are rather alarming...skins are getting lightened..and features..moulded and shaped into an ideal that is not even European..but more of a plastic surgeons figment.... |

If you think about evolution, it seems strange that people would naturally become one race, it doesn't seem to be a good survival mechanism. I'm sure if it happens nature will introduce some form of division, to re-balance it. Have you read the book Galapogas by Kurt Vonnegut? Good points... However, what you were saying about being attracted to people of another race, there is a growing belief among geneologists that feelings of attraction for someone are based on the fact that their genes would complement yours (perhaps the reasoning behind the "opposites attract" theory?). Maybe this is the reason people have such different tastes in mates (as in breeding partners-not friends, I hope ;) )? |

Hi flea; friends; comrades.... I actually voted for Lennon, but only because of a lack of genuine heroes. I've been preparing travels next spring to the far east, writing a book and occasionally checking in here to see some really dire threads eg. "coffee or tea?" being answered with humour or insight "when I was a kid I generally preferred coffee, but now I've gone off it a bit ...but its hard to know why". and other important existential dilemmas ...:(( So I've been killing time more productively.. But with chaps like Ceri flea marlowe and the rest on form perhaps I'll return to full time education ... here @xlt.mb :) :D I think Darwins work HAS been classed as racist by modern standards but the modern day non-political evolution movement seems to be all that stands between extreme right-wing religious fundamentalism and US schools.
