Man shoots two dead at Monash Uni A man armed with a number of handguns opened fire indiscriminately on a room of students at Monash University's Clayton campus, killing two and injuring five people, police said. The man, aged in his mid-30s, was tackled by several people after opening fire in a classroom at the Menzies Building, part of the campus in outer south-eastern Melbourne, at about 11.20am (AEST). Superintendent Trevor Parks told reporters the man, of Asian background, had been taken into police custody and was being questioned. "He was in the possession of a number of handguns," Supt Parks said. "He went into a classroom. It would appear there has been indiscriminate shooting following that." He said two Asian men in their early 20s were dead and five other people were hospitalised. "Apparently after the shooting incident, the gunman was tackled by other persons in the classroom itself and secured," Supt Parks said. An ambulance spokeswoman said the two most seriously injured were a man in his 30s and another man in his 20s. The first man had been shot in the upper body, while the second man had been shot in the leg and arm. Both were found near the two dead students in the classroom. Paramedics were later called to the university's medical centre where a further three people were being treated. They were a man who had been shot in the shoulder and lost the top of a finger. He has been taken to St Vincent's Hospital for plastic surgery. A woman suffering facial injuries and a 23-year-old man shot in both legs were taken to the Monash Medical Centre. Monash University Vice-Chancellor Peter Darvall said classes had been called off for the day in the Menzies Building, which would have housed up to 2,000 students at the time of the shooting. Classes in the David Derham School of Law building have also been postponed. Students have been asked to call friends and families to assure them of their safety. |

ahoy hoy. I wasn't at the clayton campus today which was lucky. A few of my friends were supposed to be there but they didn't go which was also lucky. I haven't spoken to all my friends yet though. I'll find out if they are ok at uni tomorrow. I've been getting phone calls and SMS's all day. It's a bit chaotic. |
