Artists against Piracy

I saw a thing on the news this morning about artists
campaigning against music piracy. It cracked me up. Alicia
Keys said, "Downloading an album on MP3 is exactly the same
as walking into a record store and stealing a copy".

Yes, of course it is, you're taking a copy from the
artist/publisher, whereas shoplifting you're "stealing" from
the store (and subsequently people who work there) as well.
Sily mare.

The best was when rappers (who sing about robbing banks,
muggings and saying "Fuck the law" etc.) lend their support.
Hypocrits...

I have a great deal of respect for Jarvis Cocker. He said
that he tapes most music rather than buying it, and that if
someone as wealthy as him does it he can't really complain
when other people do.

I reckon him & Courtney Love etc. should start "AAAAP"
(Artists against artists against piracy) ;)

hehe . ah.. it all boils down to economics at the end of the
day ... marx might have been on to something.

i don't know .. wasn't it you ceri that said the mp3 thing
didn't actually affect cd sales? but just the general
economic climate?

I mean, i've bought albums, of which i initially had mp3's.
I would buy stuff like HAB, or Gescom stuff, but its
impossible to get it any other way (there is ebay i guess).
But generally i think mp3's just allow me to listen to more
music that i would have before, i think i still buy roughly
the same amount of music i used to - of course, that might
just be me

I am downloading the 'Contact' album by 'not saying cuz you
will laugh' but it has 'Stop pirates' on the back of the
scanned cover. Now I want to buy this album but it came out
last fucking year and STILL I can't buy it in this country
so what the fuck am I gonna do? I wait a year so I have to
download... *sighs * I paid £20 for their last album but it
costs considerably less in Italy and the US. I want to buy,
I can't, I download. Simple.

If this came out in the UK I would be happy to retire my
bootleg. Not from HMV if it's £25 tho.

postmodernism/poststructuralism hehe:D

Yep, can't vouch for the accuracy of the stats, but several
different sources said CD sales were up 10% the same year
napster started booming. Whenever artists use low cd sale
stats it's from a period of general economic slump. A good
example of manipulating statistics to prove a point...

Personally I can only say the only album I would of bought
ahd it not been available on MP3 is portishead's dummy. I
will buy a copy of this on vinyl when I can find it. On the
other hand I have bought at least 10 other albums as
a result of hearing MP3s that I wouldn't of if I hadn't
heard the MP3s first. It really does puzzle me why artists
want MP3s banned, currently it seems to be working in their
favour...

Spikee: I agree, I want a copy of the fight club soundtrack,
but I'm not paying £20 and waiting 6 weeks for HMV to
import it from the USA...

Jonesy: no fear, i'm only rehashing marx as a pastiche, life
is a game ... but first we must decide on the rules

:)

Ceri: yeah .. i would have thought mp3's would be a
brilliant form of advertising ... loads more people hear
one's music etc ...?

all about exposure

...i'm not buying albums often...not because i have them on
mp3, but because i can't afford it....

Ithe last 3 albums i bought was Aphex - come to daddy,
radiohead - kid a (special cover-edition) and the richard d
james album....

it's not becasue i'm greedy. i just don't have much money.
And that is hard when youre a music lover

Ahh.. ok.

Well, here in nz, Borders is generally slightly cheaper (for
new releases) or the same as regular new releases, with the
bonus of having some "import" cd's at the regular price.

The fight club soundtrack is discontinued in the UK. I only
heard it 6 months ago (after DLing MP3s of it incidentaly)
and found that it is now only available on import. HMV
claimed there were no copies in stock in any of their
branches in the UK.

What's borders? an import specialist?

If they want to piss and moan about people dowloading music
then they shouldn't charge such exorbitant prices for CDs.
And you can't tell me elton John needs more fucking
presents.

"Piracy harms the industry"

- First of all, those millionaires shouldn't complain.
- musicmakers that make challanging music shouldn't be
surprised that their music doesn't sell in large numbers.
- There's hardly any evidence that piracy is the cause for
lack of profit.
- piracy stimulates ISPs and technology in which the
companies behind RIAA often also have an interest in(Sony).
- piracy gives knowledge of the existence of music
- piracy gives both rich and poor people the chance to
listen to the music they like
- piracy gives people the chance to listen to music that is
otherwise not obtainable
- CDs are too expensive
- artist are often more ripped off by their labels than by
their fans
- the "industry" is oldfashioned, think of something new
instead of compaining constantly

IMHO

:O Britney Spears said the EXACT SAME THING!!!

Can't these people think for themselves?!

Britney was part of the same campaign. Obviously some people
not only need songs, but press releases written for them ;P

it depends totally on the label and werther the artist has
sold much.

i have stuff like fatboy slim or chemical brothers as mp3,
and i do not have any moralic trouble with that. then again
i try to by all the (for example) warp stuff i want. some
stuff i just can't find as cd or vinyl. those are at the
moment mike & rich, air liquide and trickys maxinquaye.
