ok... obviously the uk has all the big names.. warp etc.
but below the immediate surface it seems like there are way
more american IDM artists than British ones. Just a few
years ago this would have been unheard of..

Mabey cuz I live out here in the states I just here about
more.. but on the other hand it's all on the net.... I'm
not gonna list off bunch of names..... but do you guys
argee..? all

Well its certainly a good thing that for RDJ, the braindance
aesthetic knows no borders and i certainly do not divide my
own seletcion of IDM into european/american/rest of the
world.

Braindance trancends number crunching, man... we´re talking
quality tunes from Phoenecia to Kyoshi Izumi, Astrobotnia to
Kid606. they rock the fucking world

the americans have nice idm artists- l'usine, phoenecia come
to mind... still the best ones imo are from britain. it
seems to be a well from which many other artists drink

i dont listen much to american "idm" but the stuff ive heard
sounds like european "idm" have done for quite some while
now. and dont tell me kid606 is original, he doesent count

The British of course. We are the best at everything. Good
Lord, we had an empire; I should think we would produce the
best in IDM. All the Yanks are good for is talking really
loud and being obnoxious.

they just dont click
there is the lack of that certain spark

Who cares where it comes from.

I think when when Warp opens their NYC branch, we're gonna
see a suge of US talent come to the forefront.

by suge i mean surge..

matmos is from the us im pretty sure..

plus we got:

Kit Clayton
Tleilaxu
Monolake
Timeblind
Sutekh
...just to name a few

The US may have more artists, but come on.. there are just
more people here. Simple equation.

Kit Clayton - Impetigo - Latke
Tleilaxu - Sickness - Genetherapy
Timeblind - Borscht - Bloatware
Sutekh - Dirty Needles - Influenza

I don't think monolake is from the US now that I think about
it...

Cheers~

Phoenecia & Richard Devine

"american = quantity

brits = quality"

Maybe in other aspects, but in 'IDM' or whatever the fuck
they call it, I don't see that as a valid statement.

No one can touch the Brit big boys.. but I would also
contend that based on my limited knowledge America has put
out some competitors.. a few examples in addition to the
mentioned ones:
-the whole southern cali thing, kit clayton, o.s.t.,
tigerbeat6, etc. and no kid606 is not shite! :)
-Phthalocyanine (and Phthalo label)
-Electric Company
-Alder & Elius
et cetera.

uviol> i have to admit i have only listend to one kid606
album. i dont remember what it was called but there was a
song on it called "it will take me a million plastic
surgeons to make me black" or something.... i didnt like it
all at. recomend me an album and i might change my mind. im
under the impression that the only reson people like his dsp
fuckery is because of the way he has been hyped.

offline uviol from United States on 2002-10-17 12:33 [#00407202]
Points: 2496 Status: Lurker

Gubb> haha it's totally OK, i was just kidding around in
response to your dislike of kid606.. but actually, it sounds
like the only LP you've heard is 'down with the scene'
which, as you rightly mentioned, was wayyy over-hyped. This
LP is, successfully or not, trying to make a statement and
therefore doesn't contain much content musically. Though I
admire it for its contruction and energy, you might want to
check out his other work which on the whole is calmer and
more substantive. what many consider to be his finest
moment is the basically ambient 'soccergirl EP'. In a
similar vein is 'P.S. I Love You', which is essentially
ambient click+cut glitch. If you want something that's not
quite ambient but still has substance, get 'GQ on the EQ++',
it's an EP with a bunch of extra tracks that are still
distorted and beat-laden without being musically devoid.
Hope this helps!

matmos are from the us...i think in san fransisco,
california. I heard on the radio they both came together
from gay clubs...not sure if they are but thats what i
heard.

Rotor+ comes from New York.

Manitoba comes out of Ontario, Canada...he's pretty close to
IDM

Plastikman comes out of Ontario, Canada.

But I still think the UK holds all the goodies. we have a
lot to be thankful for. quite a lot to learn from them as
well.

uviol: the proswell cd is excellent, i really like his
sound...great beats and melodies too. if you liked the
samples you'll love the cd. my only gripe is that most of
the tracks are very short, but that's fine...that's what the
replay button is for. i hope you like it! :)

kid 606 is great......it takes me a lot to fully understand
down with the scene but i like it....is one of my favorite
cd.....there's something higly conceptual in all his songs(i
only have down with the scene)behind the surface
noise......each song is
interesting.......PIZZA,MAFIA,SPAGHETTI......FICA

Respect to local boys Ghostly Industries (Ann Arbor MI),
which house Dabrye (Tadd Mullinix) and Midwest Product among
others.

Also, Zod records out of Milwaukee has not been mentioned.
Curtis Chip and Emotional Joystick both rock my socks.
