To start from scratch: - first make a bootdisc(for CDROM support). - Get the full(not upgrade since you don't have the ME disc) version of XP.
- Boot from the bootdisc (all you get is DOS prompt) - Format C drive (format/q c:)(Warning: all data will be gone).
- Go to the driveletter of your CDROMdrive - run setup
Good luck (it's quite a radical procedure so ask someone to help you if you've never done it before)

I've done the same thing, like they say, you either need a standf alone copy or the ME disk. So far as I know, XP upgrades aren't verison specifc -you don't need an ME CD, a Win 98 one should work fine. Borrow a 98 cd (easier to come by) reinstall that, then chuck the XP upgrade on, then set about your drivers, then programs. As long as your PC isn't really new you should find XP will have most drivers you need built in. Bear in mind a few things from ME won't work in XP, my mouse, for example no longer has force feedback and some old emulators are buggy/don't work in XP.
Looking forwards to Super Monkey Ball 2?
You still haven't said if you're coming to ATP yet... Let me know next time you're out in Cardiff.
Keyfumbler: The BD was a great laugh, I remember it all as I stopped drinking 4/5 hours before the end of the celebrations. I still haven't used up the rest of the film in my mate's camera so I'll have to wait for a new "Pogo's BD" avatar :)

Actually, you don't even need to install Windows 98 before you upgrade to XP. During the XP installation it'll ask you to insert your Win 98 disk for verification (Windows 95 disks or lower don't work). That way you can do a clean install and not have to worry about all the trash files from Windows 98 being left after the upgrade. Also, the XP upgrade CD is bootable, so you really don't need a bootdisk. Just put in the CD, and restart - it should start the installation program automatically (provided you have your BIOS configured to search for boot media in your CD drive, which it should if it's a fairly new computer). After that you can use the setup program to format your drive. It's pretty much all automated and easy.

"provided you have your BIOS configured to search for boot media in your CD drive"
Ha ha, yes, I remember I disabled that on mine in a fit of security paranoia and then had great difficulty working out why I couldn't boot from CDs...
