About how different synthesis works? Do you recognize model names of almost all synths ever made and are you fascinated about old analog synths?
Just wondering if there are people like that here. Alot of you make music with computers, but do you know about the original synths that the plug-ins etc were created to imitate?

I'm kind of a freak, and since i own several synth's, i know a bit about synthesis too.
Old modular synth's are especially good for learning about signal-flow, routing etc.
And yes, knobs and buttons turn me on :-)

I've started building some Reaktor instruments a while ago, which was a lot of fun to do. I should start doing this again... I know how the basic theory behind the synthesis types but to fully master them takes years. That's OK though because the learning itself is fun and interesting. I'm not too fussy about vintage synths or not, all noisemachines have their own character. Now if I could just stop playing and finish some decent tracks.... :)

those bitchy hell machines drive me nuts. I own a '78 korg vocoder (first ever made), an old tiny casiotone, a Korg MS 2000 and wanna get a Virus. Power of the knobs, come to me!

i try just to focus on the music
sure the synths are the means to an end... but thats it, so i wouldnt be all obsessive about them
just familiar with them, so i know what i want, and how to get it.
my setup is minimal, powerful, and lasting
thats all i need

minimal and powerful, good words.
and that's the problem with software, you can do too much.

softsynths are great, where I live there's no way to find retro vintage synths, so the closer I can get is feed my cpu with software. I still can't belive I found the old Korg Vocoder... weird story...

I love softsynths, but I have to have a midi controller for "hands on" control. Ideally I'd like to get a midi keyboard working at the same time too :)
I can't play keyboard well enough to make getting a "proper" synth worth it- I need to compose on a PC then let the softsynth play it!
Map: Re: being able to do too much with software- I agree, the depth of possibilities can make it a little overwhelming. Sometimes I just go "back to basics" and say, "Right, no midi, no FX and no Softsynths, I'm just gonig to use floops like a tracker!"

nah, not much at all, dont care for them really.
i mean sure theyre probably as good if not better than computers, but theyre fucking expensive and difficult to get hold of (esp here)

difficult in Australia?!?! come to Mallorca (Spain) and u will see what does "hard to find" mean.
btw: usually the real synth sounds better than the soft one (IMO)

I started making tunes in 91 on the A500 and Noisetracker2.0. Got me a Ensoniq SQ1+ workstation the year after. A 486 PC, Kurzweil K2000R, a Yamaha MT8X, Casio FZ-1 and Alesis Midiverb4 between 92-96. Since then I've added a Roland SH-5, MC-202, Juno-106, Nord Micromodular, Nord Modular Rack, Akai DPS12, more fx and recording gear and my laptop finally arrived yesterday. Phew!
I would love to strip my studio to bare minimum, but I would miss things if I sold them. If I had to keep two I'd keep the SH-5 and Nord Modular.

I have a pretty decent synth collection in my bedroom/studio. I would like to think that I know "a lot about synths". I like the software a little bit better right at this moment...... supercollider is all I am messing with right now....
