Just wondering if Iraq is going to nuke us all (Southern
and Western Europe/Israel/Turkey first the the US
eventually)...

I'm not from New Zealand as you can see from my profile, and
I was referring to the fact that the countries who actually
do have weapons of mass destruction and occassionally threat
to use it make big fuss about Iraq SUPPOSEDLY but never
proven having them. BULLSHIT.

Thats ancient history my friend... anyway you did make a
hell of a fuss about that, the tests were underground and
had no significant impact on the surrounding environments.
You are all ready to make a fuss about testing when
conducted by a respectable western power but when the
Chinese test in the ATMOSPHERE and the Pakistanis/Indians
test IN ORDER TO THREATEN EACH OTHER... you say nothing...
May i remind you that my country will not participate in
this war against Iraq (unless it is approved by the UN). I
think you have more to fear from the damage caused by big
polluters such as the US that refuse to ratify or even sign
the Kyoto protocol: ever heard or felt El Nino?

What the fuck are you talking about?

"like every other Nuclear nation in the world does"

What a load of uninformed shit! Where do you think the UK
tested its weapons? On the Bikini atoll, just a few thousand
miles away from home! Advanced western nations just happen
to pick far off lands to test like anyone would!
Oh and the atoll just happens to be "our back yard", its is
French territory as is Guadeloupe, Martinique, the Reunion,
New Caledonia...

Oh and don't give me that shit about the tests having
significant impact! Compare the effects of underground
nuclear testing to the ravages caused by general climate
change (the El Nino phenomenon or have you never even heard
of that!?) At least my country sends its pres to
Johannesburg and has ratified the Kyoto treaty unlike your
closest neighbours (Australia) who predicted that their CO2
emissions would rise by 15% in the next decade! Blame the US
and the Aussies for the endangering of your precious
eco-tourism damn it!

Not at all hypocritical! I don't think that the POSSIBILITY
of possesion of nuclear weapons by a "rogue nation"
justifies full scale invasion. We have no proof of the
possesion of portable devices, ICBMs or tactical nukes by
Iraq anyway. The Israelis are pretty dangerous when you come
to think of it since sharon declared that he could envisage
using tactical nukes against Iraq if a cruise missile attack
was made on his country (like in the first gulf war).
Oh and don't go on about France, we are hardly a threat to
world peace and the "force de dissuasion" is a purely
defensive nuclearforce.

well it's far from ancient histroy mate..your boat in th
America's cup is being blatantly sponsore by AREVA...an slap
in the face really to send a fleet emblazoned with emblems
of a Nuclear Energy Corporation to a Nuclear free
country..it was fully intentional..they wanted their name
associated with a benign sporting event as a PR excercise to
soften the stand of our people on it's insistant and
persistant use of our water to transfer Nuclear Waste back
and forth from those SAFE sites you are talking about....

Signing Kyoto..what a load of tosh..I am worried about what
your Govt and Areva is doing to your own people and the
Neighbouring Europen States...

COGEMA has risked the health of the oceans by the dirty
business of separating plutonium (plutonium reprocessing)
from nuclear waste.

Plutonium reprocessing results in large quantities of
radioactive waste -- the equivalent of 50 barrels a day or
an estimated 230 million litres a year -- being discharged
into the sea from COGEMA's La Hague facilities near
Cherbourg in northern France.

Greenpeace collected samples of radioactive contaminated
sediment at the end of the COGEMA marine discharge pipe that
showed levels of contamination higher than ground zero at
the nuclear weapons test site at Chasma Bay in northern
Russia. Marine life contained radioactive levels higher than
the European Union safety intervention levels. (ACCRO,
University of Bremen, September 1997).

Reprocessing at la Hague releases radioactive wastes into
the atmosphere and marine environment on a daily basis. Due
to the release of radioactive gases, levels of contamination
from the radioactive gas Krypton-85 (KrR-85) around the la
Hague site have been measured by Greenpeace at 90,000 Bq/m3,
compared with the average global level of between 1-2 Bq/m3.
Using a computer model developed by the US National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Agency, Greenpeace has shown that COGEMA's
aerial discharges contaminate the air throughout all of
Western Europe, and within two years move around the

What the hell?

"Imperialistically (and I might add..shamefully)acquired
territories"!!?

These territories were indeed acquired during the great
colonial epoch but now wish to stay french and benefit from
autonomy (especially the TOMS or "over seas territories" as
opposed to the DOMS or "overseas regions" that are closer to
frnace when i comes to financial and economic policy). The
island of mayotte recently held a referendum where the
majority of the population wishes to become french!
Referendums of this type are held every decade and always
turn out to be for autonomy but unbroken TOM status... So
there goes your hasty remark...

And what about NEW ZEALAND! Ooo no, never part of the
British Empire, ooo nothing bad was ever done to the
indigenous maori population!!

oh and i'm not denying any past, on the contrary, i am
assuming it! France has never threatened any other nation
with nuclear devastation unlike the US. Nukes are purely the
remains of Cold War fears. The tests were made to update
military tech in this domain with the introduction of more
powerful warheads.

But you are still avoiding the main point! Ecological damage
is widespread and comes from the refusal of certain
industrial nations to accept their responsibility. France
has...

there are the occasional devastating melt-downs like

the rest of the planet.

Reprocessing by COGEMA at la Hague creates large amounts of
long-lived radioactive material. COGEMA and the British
reprocessing facility at Sellafield in Cumbria are together
responsible for 97 percent of the radioactive releases into
the European environment

ok..About NZ..well it's a well documented fact that the

I knew this was going to turn up! I'm not a nationalist, i
am simply defending France's international reputation that
is so easily stained by riotous manifestations of foreign
ignorance. Le Pen was a terrible shock during the last
elections, i was myself down on the streets of Paris and at
place de la Republique with the millions of anti-fn
protestors. The rise of popularist national parties is a
europe wide phenomenon (just look at Pim in holland) but
cannot be reduced to simple arguments such as "the French
are racists and nazis". Le Pen's success can only be
understood when one has grasped the internal political
situation in France: Jospin "the socialist" thought he could
do a Tony Blair and win the election without proposing an
openly socialist and progressive program. Some of the Le Pen
voters were also people simply disillusioned with the
political class in general wanting to shock the population
into accepting all that is wrong with French politics at the
moment: corruption, elitism, loss of the sense of reality...

How can you compare an ancient nation like France and its
centuries of politcal change, cultural creation and historic
movement to the little insignificant fate of a distant land
called New Zealand? Its absurd: the fact remains that
despite your natural beauty France remains the no1 tourist
destination in the world... Maybe because people value (and
take more interest) in history (bad or good) and the study
of human turmoil more than a pretty landscape!

Lets get this straight:
1. I am against invading iraq
2. I am against ignoring environmental degradation
3. I AM FOR THE SAFE AND EFFICIENT USE OF FISSION IN PEACE
TIME (nuclear power)
4. I despair at nationalistic tendancies emerging in many
countries around the world
