Do you rename your mp3s to a specific standard and sort them into folders? Or do you just not care or have the time?
I'm going to, i'll rename them like artist - album - number - song.mp3. All 4500 of them, i'll probably do like an hours worth each night or something.
There should be an RFC type standard, so file sharing would be made alot easier (like for searching). I found this standard that i'll probably follow with all my mp3s for now on when i get them.

I tried to rename them but it would seem that some of them have unchangeable internal artisit information or something so I'm stuck with the shitty inconsistent naming schemes of the 2 million people I downloaded from. You know of any tool that can fix this :?

I split mine into 650MB folders so I can back them up onto CD and play them on my MP3CD player. When my drive gets full I can delete anything I have a backup of easy. I keep albums and single tracks apart. for albums I fill a folder up to 650megs also around 10 albums depending.

Yeah that's what I'm going to do (650Meg chunks). I'm slowly filling an empty 45Gb hard drive. I recently copied my bro's entire CD collection and alone that's about 6.5Gig. Backing this lot up is gonna be a pain.

I'm gonna use an mp3 box for my car when i get it, so i'll have to make sure each file is either tagged or somewhere contains the artist and track info. The album info isn't a necessity, but would be nice. It's gonna be controlled by remote, and the only way i'll see what's playing is via an LCD screen. I've nearly finished building it, so it'll save me alot like instead of buying a CD player or something. It's just chunky, that's all, which could be a problem for theives walking past the car.

For MP3 naming I go for...
Artist\Album\Artist-Album-TrackNo-TrackName.mp3....
But that's about as far as my organisation goes...I've kinda given up trying to keep things in any sort of complete order...never works for Vinyl, CDs, Books, anything really; just seems an impossible goal...
I'm hoping technology gonna solve all this anyway and we'll be able to listen/see what we want from anywhere 24/7...and all this collecting/organising things can dissapear into history...

Artist\Album\TrackNo-TrackName.mp3 for the ones I create myself and I bung the downloaded ones in a random folder until I buy/get tired of them.

All in the same folder but I do rename them like this:
Bandname - Songname.mp3
Reminds me, I need to reinstall Kazaa onto a separate partition. It's eating up my system partition.

artist name - song title
Everything I d/l goes into one folder. From there, if I like what I d/l, I sort it out to other folders, but when I sort, I get a chance to have things named what I want. easy easy
keep that shit simple

My player automatically sorts by id3 tag, so I never actually use the names, but they are helpful for file sharing.

according to my bf my filing system sucks (i have to agree to a point) but i'm gonna seriously get them in order cos it's driving me nuts knowing that they are just all over the place.
question : i think i have mp3's in different folders, how can i see where ALL my mp3's are located so i can put them into one central file. any ideas?

thats how itunes automatically does it, anyways. when i download, it all just goes into one folder. with itunes, you have two boxes in one window... it's kind of like frames. on the smaller one on the left, it has all your playlists, the other window shows whats in em. it's pretty nifty

*wonders how big a whales brain is?*
ehhehe
thanks......i thought it might be easy to find.
my computer needs MAJOR cleaning....it's becoming more and more sluggish eventhough i run norton everyday. =/
i have to clean out things i don't use mostly. so many programs that do the same thing 'i think' !
thanks for the advice - i plan on arraiging my mp3's in alphabetical folders with the name of the artist (for multiple mp3's of the same artist) then just alphabetical after that.
i have some with numbers in front etc...which i need to rename!
