games with a lot of units?

I seem to like games and music and visuals with a lot of
units that interact with behavior to form a system. Usually
when all the units look and behave the same or similar, it's
more appealing to me because it has a unifying symmetry.

So can you recommend videogames in particular with lots of
units? Preferably where you control most of the units, not
just one central character trying to avoid all the other
units. Command and conquer for example was quite fun.

I know what you mean, like when all the orcas fly round like
birds or the humvees line up in unison.

Pheenix (Check it out on MAME) has nice patterns in the way
the enemies move about.

How about Medieval: Total War or the prequel Shogun: Total
War? Some 10,000 units marching in formations (until they
all end up in a bloody mess in the middle)

I'll check these, thanks. I actually bought "sim earth" 2
days ago for SNES and so far am not impressed, though it has
a lot of units... I guess it tries to be too realistic, or I
just don't get it yet (didn't come with instruction
booklet)

now that total war sounds interesting...

I really like Age of Empires 2, I've played that one for
hundreds of hours. I guess it's quite old now but it's one
of the few games I can run on my system(not even direct3D
compatible)

hmm... strategy might be a big thing I'm looking for too,
now that I think about it. mmm... strata-ma-gemy...

that's why street fighter 2 was so fun, (I was trying
logically to figure out why I like a particular game. Maybe
strategy is what I'm really looking for and having lots of
units is just something that happens to often lead to
strategy due to complex interaction...) chess is fun but
it's ancient and boring compared to stimulus created by
computers. plus you have to take turns, it doesn't happen in
"real time" like command and conquer.
I've heard good things about age of empires but havn't
played it (or any of these other suggestions) bla bla bla,
thanks, I'll check all these out at gamasutra.com and look
up reviews and stuffamajig.

(well I've played tetris of course, great game really..
though you have to do a lot of interpretation or imagining
for it to be something symbolic.) maybe it's too organized,
there's not enough chaos or options of different strategic
paths.

I enjoy C & C quite a bit. DUNE is also very fun. Starcraft
has a lot of depth as far as it's units goes. Haven't gotten
too far into that though.

WC = warcraft?

AOE= ? age of empires I guess

What's SC... hmm sim city I guess

I need to get some games that have level editers, like
doomcad, that thing is so kick ass. I love doomcad. too bad
that stuff no longer works on this computer. even excite
bike was made better by allowing the player to create what
they envision. damn, I bet marble maddness could have been
awesome with this feature!

I've never even heard of Total War, the review I read sounds
so cool- 10 THOUSAND units on screen at once?? wowsers! and
the dead bodies stay on the screen.... I guess sprites have
a big advantage over polygons in this respect, just like
doom2 could have the dead bodies stay on screen, it was dumb
when they disapear in goldeneye.

HELL YEAH!
God I love gamasutra.... thanks for suggesting the total war
series because searching for that key word in gamasutra
revealed this awesome article! I suggest you read it,
rrrrrhhhhg *explodes with joy

I hope I can find all the games this group made. This seems
like the type of videogame version of schematic/musik aus
strom I've been searching for.

Ha, look what they titled one of their creations, a
combination of just about every game listed in this thread,
heh heh:

"Total Age of Doomcraft & Conquer"

Romero Alert, by Robin Walker & Brian Jacobson. A super-RTS,
with an innovative gestural command interface and thousands
of units. The game is hilariously chaotic to watch. Instead
of producing units slowly, one at a time as in ordinary
RTS's, the factories spew them forth in a fountain all over
the nearby area.

Damn, sprites have a nice advantage.

ah ha ha ha, this game sounds great. it's an
impossible-to-beat joke played on the player:

Very Serious RoboDOOM, by Sean Barrett. It works a bit like
the old Robotron 2084 arcade game, but this is more an
artistic statement on the futility of the one-against-all
power fantasy combat game. You start with a closeup view of
your avatar in a landscape, shooting at what appears to be a
small number of nearby enemies who are all converging on
you. As you do so, you collect a group of people who follow
behind you à la Robotron. However, the camera zooms out
slowly in proportion to the number of enemies you've shot,
revealing more and more of the map. It becomes increasingly
clear that the situation is hopeless. There are actually
75,000 enemies, but you don't know that at the beginning.
The transition from seemingly normal game to satiric
commentary takes place very smoothly and is actually quite
funny to watch as realization dawns.
