musicians here who have cds..

ross on 2001-08-17 03:16 [#00022521]

how long are your cd's usually? i have the problem of making
short cds..the longest one ive made is 35 minutes..recent is
about 21 minutes..i mean, the cds have good material, but i
cant make long tracks..

hevquip from a hawks colon on 2001-08-17 03:22 [#00022524]

cylob puts out short stuff. it's not really about how long
the song is anyway, it's about the song itself. if it's
good, it doesn't matter how long it is really. i kind of
like short songs more.

Geonime from here on 2001-08-17 03:31 [#00022529]

Length is an issue. I don't mind how short an album is, I
wouldn't mind if it was 10 minutes long just as long as the
songs themselves are good. People SHOULDN'T purposely
increase the length/quantity of their songs just to make the
album longer, as it may result in the songs being worse, or
the album full of bad songs.

Most of the songs I've done are about 2:00 or less, but I
have done longer ones.

hevquip from a hawks colon on 2001-08-17 03:49 [#00022530]

the only problem with short albums is that people feel
ripped off when they pay alot for them.

Aron? from Canada on 2001-08-17 04:12 [#00022539]

My Nuphics EP is only about 20 minutes in length, but it's
just an EP, not a full album...

Aron? from Canada on 2001-08-17 04:13 [#00022540]

Whoops: It's called the nuphobics ep, not the nuphics ep.

Aron? from Canada on 2001-08-17 04:14 [#00022541]

FUCK ME! It is Nuphonics ep, not huphobics or nuphics!

ross on 2001-08-17 08:36 [#00022566]

im thinking of putting my newest on those mini-cds..so it
would coincide well i think..the songs are all of good
quality, so you guys are right when you say it shouldnt
matter how long..longest song on my new cd is 2:35..shortest
1:10

ross on 2001-08-17 08:36 [#00022567]

Aron, im hesitant to call my newest an ep too, though my
last was an ep as well..my new cd has 13 tracks though

rob fragilenine from tafe on 2001-08-17 08:43 [#00022568]

negative alpha index - experiments in electronica: 10
tracks, ~55 minutes.
fragilenine - multi-timbral: 14 tracks, ~58 minutes.
test signal - ts e.p.: 6 tracks, ~68 minutes. (yes, the
average track length is 12 minutes...)

Geonime from here on 2001-08-17 13:21 [#00022682]

Why do you make EPs and stuff? Do you release them, or is it
just for yourselves? If it's the latter, why not just make a
CD and don't label it as an EP or and LP?

Mescaline on 2001-08-17 13:26 [#00022684]

This is my problem - my shortest track is 11 min.

Geonime from here on 2001-08-17 13:38 [#00022687]

Mescaline..what kind of music do you make?

al>< from dublin on 2001-08-17 15:31 [#00022706]

just made a 13 track, variable song-length cd for meself.
Now that i've spent the week listening to it and absorbing
the songs in cd format (on the bus, walking around etc) i
know i've to change about 3 to bring it where it should go.
Then i reckon i'll make 10 copies, pass 'em to freinds and
see how it goes down. What then people?...what then?
Best case-scenario> Rephlex thinks i'm hot, take me on.
Worst case scenario> Nobody thinks i'm hot except me. I
CAN'T LOSE REALLY, CAN I..cos i love 'em tracks.

rob fragilenine from a warm place on 2001-08-17 15:42 [#00022707]

I guess all that matters is that you like your own tracks.
I'm only starting to really get into my stuff, after 5 years
of making electronic music and 11 years of playing guitar. I
don't care what other people think about my music, if they
like it, good, if they don't, they can go listen to britney
spears or something, i don't care. Obviously when I play my
MP3J sets, I play bouncy stuff (to keep people moving), but
when I do my live sets, I'm gonna play
braindance/drill/ambient stuff...

As for the length of cds, it doesn't matter how long the cd
goes for, it only depends on the quality of the tracks. Take
'2 remixes by afx' for example. This only has 2 tracks (plus
bonus track), but heaps of people have bought it.. Same with
Windowlicker/Windowlicker Video, etc...

ross on 2001-08-17 21:08 [#00022815]

geonime- i label them as eps because they are so short, but
i dont really give them out too much (thats my problem, no
access to getting multiple burns..im working on that though)
so maybe ill just give this one a name without a type of
classification...rob, yeah i started to like my tracks
earlier this year, when i look back at my old ones they're
pretty terrible (but a start) it's just now it's more about
making everything from scratch, which also makes me a lot
happier (creating samples, etc)

pauwl from here at the moment on 2001-08-17 21:19 [#00022819]

rob, are you an MP3J?, and if so, what is that exactly, do
you take your computer to the disco?

Garry Shandling from Sherman Oaks on 2001-08-17 21:36 [#00022825]

Yes, and at the "disco" they "jive" to his "funk".

m....M..Mw )wW(m M m)Ww( wM..M....m on 2001-08-18 00:23 [#00022874]

I like short songs and short cd's best. I have about 6
seperate cd's of my music with only like 3 short songs on
each (plus bad versions), because every time I get finish a
few, I want to see what they sound like on cd (since the
sound quality on my computer sucks so much. I don't mean to
imply that anyone gives a fuck about anything having to do
with me, but you asked plus I had nothing more interesting
do to other than to attempt to answer you question. I am
aware that I switched do and to.

m....M..Mw )wW(m M m)Ww( wM..M....m on 2001-08-18 00:25 [#00022876]

But there WERE a couple mistakes I only became aware of
after posting too.

Garry Shandling from Sherman Oaks on 2001-08-18 00:30 [#00022880]

You mis-spelt "separate" and forgot to close the second set
of parentheses. (Sputid

m....M..Mw )wW(m M m)Ww( wM..M....m on 2001-08-18 00:40 [#00022885]

Thanks for ponting that out (I'm such a dumbass

Garry Shandling from Sherman Oaks on 2001-08-18 00:43 [#00022886]

eye ame too pleas,

m....M..Mw )wW(m M m)Ww( wM..M....m on 2001-08-18 00:46 [#00022889]

mmm... no thanks, I guess not. I just HAD a bowl of mixed
vegetables (no peas though)... peas are all shriveled and
remind me of eating pill bugs *blech*

ross on 2001-08-18 01:07 [#00022895]

i like listening to the music on cd as well, much better
quality..especially with headphones

m....M..Mw )wW(m M m)Ww( wM..M....m on 2001-08-18 02:41 [#00022902]

I think all music sounds worse on speakers, probably because
I don't currently have room in my room to correctly seperate
them for the correct panning effects that are correct.

SCORE
room-2
correct-3

winner: correct!

The_Funkmaster from Canada on 2001-08-18 02:48 [#00022903]

the length of song definately depends on the song... Lots of
songs by Underworld exceed 15 minutes, but they go on way
too long... whereas other songs by Orbital, or Aphex Twin go
on for say 10 minutes and they seem too short... if you try
to drag a song out, then it's gonna sound that way... it
depends on the song...

ross on 2001-08-18 03:06 [#00022906]

Funkmaster, i can relate to the 'dragging out' recently..i
made a really good melody and thought i'd try to make it
fresh and long, but i learned that i couldnt, so i
completely revamped the last half of the song over a period
of a few days (thinking i'd fixed it, but it still sounded
bad to me) and i finally fixed it recently...i kept it
shorter, but added quite a few new things

ross on 2001-08-18 03:07 [#00022907]

Mm-bjork said she tried to make her newest cd for a desktop
speaker system and for computers, so i dunno if itll sound
better than most things do, but imo nothing beats surround
sound and headphones (i mean, everyone agrees on headphones
usually)

Geonime from here on 2001-08-18 03:16 [#00022908]

Everything I did last year was in mono but now I utilise
stereo technology so I'd have drums and guitar coming from
the right speaker, bass and keyboards coming from left
speaker. Of course, they would be about 80% on one speaker
and 20% on the other so they mix nicely. Is this right?

Also how can I make a sound pan between speakers? I use
Cakewalk Pro Audio.

ross on 2001-08-18 03:20 [#00022909]

i used to be obsessed with spacing, and i still am, but it's
more stable now..i reckon you always gotta keep the listener
on their toes..but it really depends what you're trying to
convey too i suppose

Geonime from here on 2001-08-18 03:37 [#00022910]

I'd feel a bit ripped off if I bought a 20 minute album for
full price, but i'd feel far more ripped off if it was 60
minutes but full of the same songs stretched out so they
become repetetive.

ross on 2001-08-18 03:42 [#00022911]

geonime, if i were on a real label, i would do what i could
to make the 20 minute cd quite cheap, so people werent
aggrivated..thom yorke said that they make cds usually 45
mins. what would be a normal car ride to go somewhere..found
that interesting

f.l.e.a from NZ on 2001-08-18 03:46 [#00022913]

I think I just stretched the limits of an EP at 39:59 :)

Geonime from here on 2001-08-18 03:53 [#00022915]

Mogwai did an EP which lasted longer than 40 minutes. I
think.

Aron? from Canada on 2001-08-18 03:58 [#00022916]

Isn't Autechre's EP7 almost 50 minutes long? It's pretty
long for an EP anyway...

Geonime from here on 2001-08-18 04:02 [#00022917]

How can it be called an EP if it's 50 minutes long? Silly
Autechre. Godspeed You Black Emperor! release albums with 3
or 4 tracks and don't call them EPs.

Their latest album had 4 tracks and was a double album!

m....M..Mw )wW(m M m)Ww( wM..M....m on 2001-08-18 04:42 [#00022923]

geonime, for the panning effects, at least in my limited
musical technology knowledge of modplug tracker, simply put
in the correct code on the last lines of every row. thEre
are 16 panning positions in modplug: S80, S81, S82, S83,
S84, S85 ,S86 ,S87, S88, S89, S8A, S8B, S8C, S8D, S8E, S8F
which range from left speaker to right respectively. I don't
know how the complicated software technological gizmos
actually work, but I just use the software interface someone
else (who must be damn brilliant) made, and MAGICALLY it
just works. Again, I recommend crunch's "1" for panning
effects. Also some tri rep by autechre and the 2nd song from
lp5. I think the title ep7 IS fitting, because they are the
only group to be able to bend/stretch time itself. They fit
a whole year into "acroyear2" it sounds like. The tracks are
theoretically short, but just looked at with a microscope
which takes awhile. I also have a lot of panning in this
song I just finished that is probably far superior to
anything else I've done, since I used a new technique. (you
know, that song that nobody but cm wanted to listen to-
possibly because they didn't want the accompanying imaginary
virus. I can only make imaginary viruses because I lack the
know-how to make real ones. I remember the hiv virus having
a pretty wicked tactic, but don't remember exactly how it
worked. My long term memory is fried from all the
videogames.

f.l.e.a on 2001-08-18 07:47 [#00022941]

what I meant was that, what started out as a project with an
ep length CD kept stretching and stretching..I had a funny
title for it that I wanted to keep so now even at LP length
it is an EP because the title says so LOL
