i agree with everything she says in the article. it's the same thing chris morris was trying to satirise in the 'paedophiles' episode of Brass Eye. and he ended up becoming the target of the howling shellsuited mob too because of it.

a good areticle, those people and the media make me sick
all this hype over particular cases...why should these take precedence over others that then go unnoticed...its all to sell papers.
I noticed the media went very quiet on that milly case all of a sudden. why's she any less important now? I also noticed that straight away finger were being pointed at the internet being a cause of the 2 girls going missing. media hype

Actually there was a recent case of a 14 year old girl being raped (and killed?) in the US after meeting some chap on the net... It is however highly inappropriate to fabricate a news item related to the case without any real evidence of any dangerous chats online...

a curious question: is this paedophile phenomenon a regular fixture in the united states too? we rarely hear anything in the uk about overseas incidents of this kind, and yet it seems to be in the british media every month...
is the phenomenon itself a global thing, or is it just the british media's handling of it that is different?
thoughts?

Oh of course its global core, but Britain has the highest concentration of serious sex offenders in Europe! Paedophilia is amost non-existant in certain southern european countries like Portugal and Italy. Maybe western anglo-saxon cultures are more prone to this form of crime out of disrespect and a lack of love for the child?

sadly every other day there is a lead story about a missing or abducted child.
the latest one just ended happily? if you can USE that word in this case, with the arrest of the MOTHER who hired two men with guns go in beat up the father and kidnap their son in the middle of the night. the son is back with his father (with psychic scars i'm sure) and his mum is in jail. =/
this HIGH profile case just ended and is in the penalty phase - deciding life or death.

the attitudes towards these things differs greatly in the rest of europe regarding relationships with younger people (not that i'm saying we should jump into bed with them!)
anyway, we are getting things mixed up...these high profile cases aren't even to do with sex offences, just the murder of young people...its mixups like this that makes it even more dangerous

yup.....it tis interactive in a way
they read emails as you send them. they have a daily poll called the '13th juror' and you vote on the topic of the day.
ie. does so and so deserve the death penalty.
they have people like alan dershewitz arguing different sides of cases. and the commentators are all working attornies (or barristers like ya'll say). it's interesting to say the least to see the legal system in action.

Since the dealth penalty has been mentioned take a look at this example of european tongue and cheek!
"Germany has told the United States it will withhold evidence against Sept. 11 conspiracy defendant Zacarias Moussaoui unless it receives assurances that the material won't be used to secure a death penalty against him, Germany's justice minister said in remarks released Saturday. Investigators suspect Moussaoui, who is awaiting trial in Virginia on charges of conspiracy to commit terrorism and murder federal employees, was training to become the pilot of one of the airliners hijacked for the attacks when he was arrested."

Peter File > that is so close to being a realistic example of UK tabloids that the satire outweighs any claims to it being in poor taste (which tabloid coverage always is). Do you remember the BrassEye uproar in the Star being on the same page as a picture of "Rear of the Year" 15 year old Charlotte Church pictured in a tight top with the headline "Chest swell!" (thats right she's 15 & her tits are growing)
Ben > Agree with you about the lack of distinction between child-fanciers (pedophiles) and child- killers (Brady/Hindley etc...). The two aren't mutually inclusive and Britain DOES have a confused attitude towards sexuality; always has.
No surprise that the two families' tragedies have been hi-jacked by careerist MP's and moral crusaders to drain us of yet further civil liberties.
Heres a thought... If you saw a child on their own looking lost and vulnerable in a street or field , would you go and talk to them ? If they were out on a country lane would you offer them a lift ? I ask this because the climate we have created is one where the only way to protect yourself from claims of attempted abuse/abduction are to sail on by and completely ignore the situation. Even slowing your car to check out the kids' state could be seen as predatory........
And yet you could miss the chance to save their life or at least get them home safely...
paranoid times these my friends

..and it affects everyone now.
I was in a mall the other day and there was this little asian toddler pissing around in a shop having evaded her parents' supervision. So I look down at her and she just gives me this beaming smile - the kind that small children give that makes you all shmushy and want to exclaim "awwww!". I look up (this is all happens within a split second or two) and her mother gives me this look like I was some kind of fecking pedophile or something. It's understandable on her part, especially in light of recent events but it still sickened me.
What is happening to modern society ?!

I posted a thread about this last week after seeing the mob outside court. It looked medieval. There were parents who had taken their kids (quite young in many cases) to hurl abuse at the van. Many of the children were quite obviously distressed, and not at the murder, but the behaviour of the people around them.
This is all fueled by the right wing press who whip up hysteria about paedophilia, abuse and murder. If you look at the statistics, it is not strangers who abuse or murder children, but family members. It is the family, which the right wing holds so sacred, that is the arena for abuse. Its the same regarding women. In the UK, two women die at the hands of their spouses every week.
