'was just wondering whether any of you knew of the works or
steve reich. some list him as one of the fore-fathers of the
electronic music movement. I dunno 'bout that but his
compositions sure are enchanting...

yea he studied drumming when he was 14 with the New York
Philharmonic Orchestra timpanist; later he took a degree in
philosophy at Cornell (1953-7) and studied composition at
the Juilliard School (1958-61) and at Mills College (1962-3)
with Milhaud and Berio, also becoming interested in Balinese
and African music. In 1966 he began performing with his own
ensemble, chiefly of percussionists, developing a music of
gradually changing ostinato pattems that move out of phase,
creating an effect of shimmering surfaces; this culminated
in Drumming (1971), a 90-minute elaboration of a single
rhythmic cell. From circa 1972 he added harmonic change to
his music, and later (Tehillim, 1981) melody.

Wow a Copy-Paste-Post summary !
I didn't like the remix album either. He keeps cropping up
in the orb's work and others. I just bought the Nonsuch box
set so I have a lot of listening to do.

im a huge miniamlist fan---reich included

the best example of reich's style is his masterpiece 'music
for 18 musicians'

i think all minimalism is the fore father of electronic
music

i'm gonna get 'music for 18 musicians' when i see it
somewhere. 'Drumming' is ace, god knows how he got live
musicians to play that stuff. 'Early works' is a nice
introductory thing to his tapeloop stuff.
"It's gonna rain... It's gonna rain... It's gonna rain..."

Thanks LeCoeur I'll read it tonight. And thanks for the warm
welcome !

Sikcerug I'm impressed ! Ok that doesn't take much when it
comes to making music. My last attempt with Reason was
fairly disasterous ! Nice track. Got any more ?

1 - its gonna rain
2 - come out (to show them)

crazy mashed loops, well worth a listen

yeah
"come out to show them" is nice. the guy has a nice soft
black voice whereas "it's gonna rain" is harsh ! Great
stuff
I'm currently hooked on 4 Pianos and New York Counterpoint

thats an ace link, as i said, must pick up 'music for 18'
sometime.
played 'open the bruise up and let some of the bruise blood
out to show them' at a party once - carnage ensued.

My personal favourite is "Music for a Large Ensemble" on the
ECM. The problem with Reich is that often new recordings of
his work are botched (compare the NoneSuch recording of
Music for 18 musicians to the original ECM recording, the
former is clearer but lacks the emotional intensity and
precision of the latter).

this week and listen to them both (Music for 18 Musicians
and Selected Ambient Works Volume II) back-to-back.

A friend of my brother's says that Wagner's Tristan et
Isolde followed by Aphex Twin's Classics is a pretty
mind-blowing combination. That's another one to try !

Reich , along with Jarre, Orbit, Glass, Tangerine Dream ,
Eno ...

All have an ability with sound which goes well as
sound-track / background music to other forms of art , eg.
visual art in films.

I find them not attention-grabbing enough to stand up on
their own. I guess thats the point of ambient music though,
you should be able to appreciate it without thinking about
it being there

I'm not too keen on William Orbit. I bought 'Pieces in a
Modern Style', listened to it about 3 times then gave it
away. I was going to try and sell it but in the end I
couldn't wait, it was too big a blemish in my cd
collection.

On the other hand I don't see how anyone could listen to
Reich as background music. I could never have any other
sound happening in the room at the same time (apart from
maybe the sound of my keyboard!). That's a perversion, a
heresy! Reich stands up on his own. Heck Reich supports the
fucking building he's played in!

Jarre is always the same. OK the guy's a pioneer but with
his father's fortune it can't have been particularly hard
for him.

Say! If you're familiar with come out (to show them)
Is it definately Bruised blood and not blues blood. I
remember making up my mind (thinking it important) I think I
went for Blues actually cos I thought Bruised just sounded
wrong.

Really? That's great!

I recently went on holiday in the highlands and then in
Argyllshire so I visited loads of CRM related places.
Visited the mock-up of his (demolished) house, the Glasgow
school of art, the Tearoom, and the house he designed in
Bellahouston Park.

Plus the guy spent loads of time at Port Vendres in a region
(near Perpignan) that I have spent all my summer hols from
birth to the age of 15/16 in.

What delightful coincidences!

I have heard Drumming and It's Gonna Rain and I can't stand
either. I can't even sit through them, much less enjoy
them; and enjoyment is essentially why I listen to music.
