 | In June, after the British musical group the Planets introduced a 60-second piece of complete silence on its
latest album, representatives of the estate of composer John
Cage, who once wrote "4'33"" (273 seconds of silence),
threatened to sue the group for ripping Cage off (but
failed, said the group, to specify which 60 of the 273
seconds it thought had been pilfered). Said Mike Batt of the
Planets: "Mine is a much better silent piece. I (am) able to
say in one minute what (took Cage) four minutes and 33
 seconds." [The Independent (London), 6-21-02]

 | Yes, it's like not being able to use another's concept - mind you, it would mean a lot less shit in the charts! So
maybe it's not all bad! :D

 | 4'33" is my boss's lynchpin argument against modernity, or postmodernity, or something. His other pet peeve is
frivolous lawsuits, so when this story got posted to
overlawyered.com it was like a double chocolate almond mocha
 intellectual orgasm for him.

I think the whole thing smacks of one of the great art
pranks, like the kind of stuff in the Re/Search pranks
issue. The whole shebang needs to be documented on video and
shown in a chi chi gallery with a nice beaujolais. The
verdict should be that the offenders have to spend a year
 shackled to a Korean man.
