Well, it's definitely different, but I don't think it's as
bad as everyone is making it out to be.

There are some very beautiful things on this release and I
didn't know Gaz could sing that well.

Still, I guess I'm a little saddened by the fact that
they'll most likely never do something that sounds similar
to the pre-Isness material. It's a shame because that was
also some amazing music.

I guess every artist (or artsists in this case) needs to
move forward. It's healthy.

Ah yes. I have to look at it that way too -- not as an FSOL
release.

you know, if this were the 70s and pink floyd had released
this album everyone would say it's brilliant.

yeah

the only problem with that... is that this album has had
time to be inspired by all of the stuff that was released in
the 70s

but i agree

its fucking amazing

the perfect step for them

they truely show how great of producers they are on here, as
well as musicians and song writers

i think they were exclusively going after that 60s and 70s
psychedelic and middle-eastern sound but some of the
production techniques are cutting edge - stuff the beatles
only hinted at with songs like "tomorrow never knows" and "a
day in the life".

of course... but its obviously inspried by a previous
style... not creating it

i think if the members of FSOL were alive and making music
in the 60s and 70s they'd be in history books. gaz isn't an
amazing singer but his voice is a lot like john and paul's.
with a few more years of training it could be on their level
of singing. (IMO the brilliance of john and paul were their
lyric and music writing abilities, not so much their
voices.)

"galaxial pharmaceutical" really hits the spot for me, that
could well be one of my favorite songs since the
blackalicious album came out in may.

(about the beatles... i agree... although paul has a great
voice... a HUGE range!)

but alls im saying, is that if they were alive in the 70s,
they wouldnt have made this album, beucase its inspired...

no doubt they would had made great ground breasking stuff
though...

while the isness is definitely a psychedelic album it
doesn't sound exactly like a psychedelic rock album or a
psychedelic electronic album. it's a perfect mix of the two
balanced with traditional indian influences. plus pop. plus
folk ("the isness", "meadows", "mello hippo disco show"),
and soul ("the lovers").

they wouldn't have made this exact album in the 70s of
course, but they'd make something as good or even better.
tho this album may not be fans' favorite, like nin's 'the
fragile', serious fans have to admit it's musically the most
superior.

i think they are very underrated

sure everyone knows about PNG, but for most people, they
have kind of faded away imo.

kind looked at like a early 90s band...

i think they are timeless

i think electronica fans are being closeminded about this
album. i hope they keep it cos when they turn 30 or so and
have listened to different types of music and matured
they'll realize how amazing it is.

man, i got dissconnected last night... couldnt log back on
till now :S

i typed this long thing... heres a shorter version:

To me, The Isness reminds me of the end of Final Fantasy VII
(i think?). FF7 takes place in the future, and is very
mechanized... anyways, at the end, there is a great
explosion that basically destroys the world.

You think bummer right? Well, if you watch all the way
through the end credits, then there is a cgi movie, and it
shows some years later, that nature has lived on. The ruins
of the cities are covered with plants and forests, and the
animals now roam the earth again. Its very uplifting.

This is what The Isness makes me think of every time i think
of this album.

This album was the most logical step for FSOL.

They made all this futuristic electronic music (the
futuristic cities). Then the dude almost died (the
explosion), and came back with a more natural sound (the
nature covering the old ruins of the city)

I dunno... thats how I think the future will be...

we will continue to develop and develop, but at some point,
we are going to all die.

The nature will just live on after us, and rebuild over the
ruins of our civilization.

so yeah, The Isness has a profound effect on me :)

well I just got and inspite of all the short comings and
dissapointment at then not expanding on the amazing creation
Dead Cities..I actually like what I have heard:)..I think
people are a bit hasty making the leap directly back to 70's
to find it's precedents etc..true..that's where this style
was originated..but more recently some fantastic neo
psychedelia has been produced by Legendary Pink Dots, Tear
Garden, Hilt etc..which seems like a better frame of
reference here...yes it's brighter, more cheerful and
optimisitc than that stuff...but those are the associations
I a making and am enjoying it....
plus that flute..maan Jethro Tull is a one of my favourite
bands from that era...it's evoking that quite
successfully...
Plus the production is so vast rich and deep those strings
make the hair on my arms go errect...lovely..

I think my only complaint is the Sitar sounds..now that is a
cliched sound..and if you come from where I come from
hearing it played by virtuosos..the rock adaptation is just
annoying...

other than that.....I like it more than I want to:)

titsworth: i think electronica fans are being closeminded
about this
album.

You could say that about every major release this year.
Braindance fans are being extraordinarily fickle...

Yet they're still buying anyway, so...

No problem ;.)
