So we are newer leaner tighter regime on this board. To some it maybe an apt development longtime coming with the latest spate or bannings just what this board needed.

But I have heard a few voices wondering if those banned needed a second chance. I will add my voice to those, but rather than merely moaning I will try and be constructive and proactive and put forth a suggestion.

Even though I know this message board is not a democracy, and the matters are entirely up to the Webmasters' discretion (as they well should be for they are offering an amazing service and forum, working tirelessly for no obvious rewards but personal satifaction..I have a lot of respect for that)o we all still like an a modicum of an illusion of it.

So the suggestion is this. When a memeber is on the verge of being banned, how about one of the Webmasters place a thread about it for people to vote on, keep at the top of the index like they did on the "Terrible Mistake" thread..set a number of people saying yes to the banning of the person (the number can be arrived at by the moderators and webmaster by adjudging the numbers of users effectively present and affected etc) as a quorum or a quota. In the meanwhile temporarily freeze the account of the account of the accused until a decision is reached.

I know the suggestion might be just tedious and longwinded, and the practical way maybe just shutting down those who become a pain in the neck, but this way the other members might get a feeling that they are having a say in their favourite community.

I've a feeling this post would be a lot more popular if it was dumbed down a little bit, and shortened. I'm gonna start reading now, though.

Well, Exhore DID get a second chance, he's unbanned. As for Plugexpert, well... that's up to Phob. I said I'd like to see him reinstated, but it ain't up to me...

And that sounds like a good idea, I'm all for it.
I remember the first guys to get banned from V5... Micheal M (?I think?) and that little pest Jupiter, heh.

He was just fucking around... I think... but it was annoying. I'd let him back, but, uh, maybe I'm wrong and he really DID want to get kicked off. :-/ In that case, I guess he's in ecstacy right now, in a bubblebath celebrating his banning with some nekkid wimmen.

hehe
I dont know I have mixed feelings about him..he is amazingly talented..and I liked his..painfully honest critiques of the mp3's he heard (mostly negative in my case.heh..but he made good points)..a lot of his arguments started over that I think..some people dont take criticism of their own music all that well..

but other than that yes..he did come off..off hand and contrary on most of his posts..some people saw it as arrogance...I dont know..maybe that was just the way his personality was wired...

Hit the nail right on the head, the guy is a character. Don't think he meant to piss anyone off, really... just a bit rough around the edges, abrasive.

And he said he had like 30 CD-Rs of porn, which inspired awe within me. 30! I salute him for that, yeesh.

I get a kind of a "Big Brother" (the television show..) feeling..

with a board as big as this, with such a large amount of people coming here, wouldn't it (as you've said yourself) be too tedious?

i dont think that would work well...
popular people on the board would get endless 'second chances' to change... just cus they have a bunch of friends on the board, or because they're well liked.

meanwhile if enough people dont like someone.... they could get kicked
unfairly it could go either way
it would just be a popularity contest members would be able to vote without necessarily knowing the whole situation

also i dont know if most people on this board have good judgement... i personally wouldn't want to trust EVERYone on teh board w/ my fate if i were being banned.

theres a reason why only a few members are chosen as moderators... its because the webmasters have decided that they have good enough judgement to be trusted.

hmm..I agree about the popularity contentst aspect..but I am yet to come across a to be Banned that was a contender for popularity contests here...this way I think the less popular (for any number of reasons) would get a chance..from those silent unheard quarters....
plus..no matter how crooked the judgement of the board members might be..they are board members after all..and they have to put up with the things the accused is doing...

but like I said my original idea was a bit vague..and somebody bringing up Big Brother..has just slapped the potential abuse of it all into focus..

Webmasrters and Moderators dont consider anning people unless they are a humongous pain..I think the whole thing is getting blown a bit out of proportion..its not a weekly vote off you know..only for those rare occassion a need like this occurs...

....but do you really think one of our moderators could get away w/ abusing the system?

they could never get away w/ it...
for example if you, flea, were banned right now because ophecks just hates you.....
there would be a HUGE outcry and protest! we would definitely notice, and notice that u didn't do anything wrong.

plus, there would also be possibilities of abuse w/ a voting system....

...i can think of a couple of board members right off the top of my head who, if there was a vote right now, would get banned no problem
enough people hate them nevermind the fact that neither of them has done anything wrong.

but IF they ever did ANYTHING wrong, even something pretty minor, they would get banned for sure..
...even for things some really popular members would almost certainly get let off for.

  u know what i mean?
i hope u dont want me to go into specific examples of who and what im talking about... i think u can guess

just one little slip up.. one little excuse to try to ban them.. and u know for sure they'd lose the vote

Good point... I bet Reflex would be voted out... he may be a bit caustic sometimes, but he's done nothing to merit being booted off the island... er, out of the messageboard.

Why isn't it a democracy?
  - You can talk. Anytime. About Aphex Twin related things. Electronica related things. Things are in the mind of guys in your age. (except stupid and pointless things i admit)

  - Do police in the so called democracy (i mean U.S.A) asks the citizens if they hunt somebody down?

+....but do you really think one of our moderators could get
  away w/ abusing the system?
they could never get away w/ it...+
nope never even meant to imply that..dont know..how this reasoning actually evolved out of what I posted..hmm..on the contrary I think the moderators and the webmasters are doing a most terrifice job and are extremely tolerant...

but I am just talking about how a lot people seem to think..some of the banned people should get a second chanece..that's all...
and I am not talking about voting before anything occurs..no usually a banning occurs when the poster in question basically have a rather public meltdown and they go on a rampage or a spree...

Okay personally I cite Kara for example...I dont it she was an it or he was a she..but as far as kara was concerned..I didnt actually see her/him/it make a single objectionable post..Wild Exagerrations/Grandstanding crying for attention..but I think the biggest problem in the Kara scenario was that he/she and it was just rubbing everyone the wrong way..majority of the people found her claims offensive and errupted into abusing flames all around her/him/it...The whole place was in chaos and the atmosphere was so dense you could cut it with a knife..so I guess she was bad for the board and she had to go...

once again..no offence meant... I was saying that as compared to the unmoderated wild kingdoms of the USENET (which I am a veteran of)..there is a degree of moderation and control..and the Webmasters have a final say unlike USENET where people have to take matters in their own hands regarding the beahaviors of particularly offensive troll and have to contact their ISP's...
I am glad that things dont get as bad here as they do or did on the USENET where..Deaththreats and threats of hunting someone down in the real world are common or were common..the only one I have seen stoop to that level here is probably teknterrorist..and even he was I hop being tongue in cheek about the whole thing..

well, i was refering to this, from ur earlier post:
"and somebody bringing up Big Brother..has just slapped the potential abuse of it all into focus.. "

sorry, i dont know what else you could have meant other than the possibility of abuse in the current system

d'oh!
i thought u meant "Big Brother" as in BIG BROTHER, from the book 1984....
'Big Brother' was the totalitarian government in the book that controlled every aspect of everyone, including what they said and though

people often bring 'big brother' when talkign about stuff like censorship and control over people..... i thought thats what was being meant, sorry!

isn't it weird that both uses of the term "Big Brother" are relevent here?

yeah funny that..I was actually refering to the Big Brother TV series..where the board members are going to vote off..their least favourite on a weekly basis..(qrter brought that up)..and NOT the Big Brother as in Phobiazero or the Webmasters or the Moderators being an emissary from 1984..not for one second did that cross my mind..

tunemx: i don't think it's a democracy, look at all the porn topics that have been closed just cos phob and sine think it's a dumb and/or degrading topic to discuss. for some people it's a perfectly valid topic!

flea: i don't think voting would be a good idea in practice. here's an example of what would happen. imagine someone's account is frozen and board members have to decide on whether or not he's banned. what if they decided by just a small margin NOT to ban him. then he knows who wants him on here and who doesn't. that's a pretty tough situation to come back to (ask ExHore, unless he's so emotionally detached that it doesn't bother him).

as for kara and clones, although out of context they did nothing wrong, in context they came solely to disrupt the board. the exception to this is hexagonal dope whose banning i've always resented but obviously have no right to change.

by the way, if i ever disappear all of a sudden from this board and no one makes a topic about it, it's because i've been banned. check for my profile, it'll be missing.

I agree with AMinal, there's a few on here that'd start a witch hunt. Lets say for argument sake it was me who was to be banned, I could probably name a list of at least 10, who'd have me banned for the hell of it - 'cos they're jerks! And likewise with Reflex.....getting them banned for the wrong reasons!

So I don't think your idea is very practical Flea - sorry!

Good to see these things discussed...
Second chances already exist...ask Reflex; he was banned for some very good reasons but, after some discussions with Phob, was let back on the board...

Banning is so rare and you have to do some pretty hardcore shit over a long period of time for it to be considered...and warnings are issued well beforehand...

ps BTW Jupiter is still on the go...I've bumped into him on a number of design boards (where he's continued his mission to annoy the entire net community...)...So far he's been banned from 3 design boards I know of (including TDR, YAYHOORAY...)...

yes I agree on that point totally..that would be the biggest CON (as in opposite of PRO) of my suggestion...hmm
but there's also the weekly polls..where the results are anonymous..hmm..have one of those kinds of fields allocated to such a problem would solve that problem..but as everyone has so rightly pointed out..these occurences are so rare...

yes I was a bit bummed about hexagonal dope as well..what if she was telling the truth?..

I think tunemx is misleading people by suggesting that the message board is a democracy. It isn't.

The rules as outlined in the FAQ seem pretty simple to me. If you don't like them, start your own community.

This voting idea seems silly and would be another unwanted intrusion of the real world (politics and popularity contests) into our happy virtual community.

  My 2 cents.

i'm not saying she might've been telling the truth, to me it was an obvious joke that just had some bad timing. she didn't know it'd get so out of hand, and after she said it once she had to run with it. i feel really sorry for her, i don't think she was aiming to get banned, just have fun for an hour or so at a FEW gullible people's expense.

There's no hostility.
I'm just saying that if you don't like the fact that you can be banned for simply annoying the webmasters, it's probably best to go somewhere else. That's all.

I totally agree that we should voice our opinions if we don't like something. Discussion is good.

It's just that I don't see a problem with the current "benevolent dictator" style of board moderation.
