8 hours of work, 1 minute of music.

Yep. That song I was raving about, it took me 8 hours to do
the first minute. And I've only done the drums! I plan to
make it about 3:30-4:30 mins in the end... bloody hell, does
it take everyone this long, or am I just crap?

recently i've been editing songs for hours, but usually over
a period of 1 or 2 days..the more time the better though,
usually..however, i've made plenty of songs that took a lot
of the time and then just thought 'it doesnt do anything for
me' and got rid of them..i hate that..

Well now I know just HOW MUCH superior to dance music IDM
is. I can put together a decent dance tune in about 10-20
minutes!

People shouldn't dance normally. They should jump around
like they're having a fit, which is what I do along to
Squarepusher. When I see people in clubs, they're not
letting off adrenelaine, they're just looking at women's
cleavages.

I'm glad now, anyway, that I'm making music I'm proud of.

I have yet to spend over an hour or two on a song (and it
shows!). I just sort of like blurting out things.

Maybe I have ADD or something

Barrett, Syd from Toronto on 2001-08-09 23:47 [#00020831]

if it's taking a long time, and it's not sounding that
great, then quit and go back to it later.
aphex has several things going at once.

The Grey Gentleman from Eugene, Oregon on 2001-08-10 00:30 [#00020836]

WELL IF APHEX DOES THAT I HAFTA DO IT, TOO!

Mr Biffo on 2001-08-10 00:34 [#00020837]

You should also buy a tank! And live in a bank!

od from perth on 2001-08-10 01:38 [#00020846]

greygent - yeah im similar to that

i rush things out - i should spend more time on the
production...err the polishing off of the trracks...i thnkn
thats where most fo the time should be spent.

if you spend most of the track making time scratching your
head and wondering what to do next.....might aswell be
watchign Tv or somehting while you thjink.

what am i trying to say.
fuck i dont know

Barrett, Syd from Toronto on 2001-08-10 01:49 [#00020850]

oh fuck. settle down. i was going to add a comment about
that, but i figured you people would have picked up on the
sarcaism there.

don't be telling me shit like "if aphex does it you have to
too!" from what i've seen and read, most of the people here
have no clue what they're talking about. i'm not gonna say
who, and i'm not trying to say i'm all high and mighty. but
for alot of people here, that's all they try to sound like.
i've heard alot of music by alot of people that come here.
there's some good stuff, and there's some bad stuff. but
regardless, 80% of it sounds exactally like aphex twin.

at the same time, we're on an aphex board. i figure he's a
better refrence to something like this than most other
people, cause everyone here knows who he is obvousily (i
hope).

i'm just saying, go work on something else, then come back
to it later as soon as it starts to fustrate you. once you
start getting fustrated, it's best to take a breather. do a
shitty dance track and make yourself laugh. then go back to
it.

it was sarcasim people.

Fuck off Mr Biffo. I hate you.

Mr Biffo on 2001-08-12 23:16 [#00021347]

Oh. I actually quite like you.

Geonime [0121] from final home on 2001-08-13 01:27 [#00021363]

Oh. Well let me just ask are you Paul "digitiser" Rose
himself or just someone who stole his name? I haven't read
any of your posts here but Paul "digitiser" Rose himself
sent me a rather nasty e-mail a while ago which I shall
never forget.

Mr Biffo on 2001-08-13 02:39 [#00021383]

No, I'm not the real Paul Rose! ...What did his email say?

rob fragilenine from tafe on 2001-08-13 03:21 [#00021387]

Here are the times I spend on each element of my tracks:

- Creating synth sounds: ~ 1-4 hours
- Drum sounds: ~ 1-2 hours
- Compiling good sounds: ~ 15 mins
- Thinking up a decent melody/drum line: ~ 15-30 mins
- Making a track around it: ~ 1-6 hours (sometimes spread
over a few days)
- Post production (reverb, glitches etc): ~ 2-4 hours

A few other things:
- If I'm doing something (ie. surfing net, studying,
watching tv etc.) and I get inspired to do a song, I stop
doing whatever it is and load up FT2... By inspired, I mean
I hear something and it makes me think up a really good
melody or drum line... My song 'Ambiblismpot' (from
members.fortunecity.com/fragilenine/naxmusic.html) is an
example, and also my remix of orangedust's song 'Option'. I
had the bassline in my head all day and new exactly what I
wanted the song to sound like...
- I'm better at guitar than I am at keyboard, so I come up
with my melodies mostly on guitar.

This is probably useless information, but who cares, eh?
