my point is that films have got such a hold of our culture, the discerning reality without resorting to silver screen metaphors, is becoming a bit difficult, because everything we perceive as reality is filtered and accesssed through the media, and the media insists on dipping in to visual vocabulary of the film industry to convey"reality* to us......on the other hand film has taken to tricks of reportage"shaky grainy handheld cams" to diminish the gap between fact and fiction and heighten "realism"...

the most frequently heard bystander reaction on 9/11 was..
"it was just like the movies..."
it's hard to digest real events without it triggering it's fictitous counterpart...infact politicians are actively using the film to access the receptive parts of the constituents psyche..
one of the politicians here in NZ has launched his campaign with the Theme from Mission Impossible..on the eve of the big thearatical release of Mnority Report..

Another renacted "The Seige" and blocked off the entirely central City with commando troops hopping in Unision month after the movie was released for an economic conference starring Bill Clinton..
many of the newsreporter starting the coverage of the event by say..
"Like a scene out of the movie "The Seige"..

flea you are a very smart man :) i think - isaid it last night that people need commercial points of reference before they can fully digest the fine detail of a situation say like 9/11 - it seems so unreal and the only medias they have to view it are the same ones that bring you mars attacks or something like that ..
also people are only given the news they are expected to take - ie cnn in the us tells a completely different story to channel 4 in the uk ..

The media blackout going on in the US since 9/11..is quite incredible...and this is the nation that boasts..of freedom of speech and cultural "enlightenment"...to a degree that they can assume to dictate morality and freedom to other nations!!!

I have actually been in America...infact it was during the first gulf war..I feel really sorry for the people..they are helpless pawns in the machinations of the govt/corporations/media..the kind of textbook propaganda they have to put up with is beyond beleif..a classic example was that yellow ribbon campaign during the first gulf war..they hrboured support for the war by saying that if you wear/buy a yellow ribbon you support our troops..and if you dont then you wish them illwill...I mean what kind of a conundrum is that..many people I knew were terrified of not wearing the yellow ribbons because they would get taunted..oh so you want our troops to die do you?

wellthe idea of participiation for the greater good is part of the media - they need to appeal to the fears and ideals of the average man to sell copy - in war it's more intense - and corporate sponsorship that plays on the #2common good " just enhances these feelings - tv has no room for those who don't conform..
