Worldwide? Is that the figure we're looking for? Think of
the thousands of IDM records out there? Are there more
records than fans? 5000 are you joking?

If Jega sold 7000 then how much do you think RDJ and BoC sell?

Gotta be 2 million.

Depends what you call a fan...

Someone that downloads loads of free music and pretends to
be superior.

Someone who wears a scarf and sweat bands of the music they
like and would do anything to kiss and lick them

or it could be simply

One of the many millions who have heard aphex or Ae BOC etc
on an advirtisement and thought 'OOooo, I like that'

I don't know!

yap it's a hard question, i mean the most people who know
and love aphex, they also "like" BoC, Ae, Squarepusher,
u-ziq, bogdan etc. so i think it's hard to say how much
peoples are "IDM Fans", and like JivverDicker said, it
depends what you call a fan..., a great collector of this
sort of music is a IDM fan, my opinion.

He still uses a JD800 the roland synth that has a really
specific 'plasticy' digital sound. His melodies are
japanese cute but not cutesy.

I hate the term IDM, I also hate the term electronica...it
all sounds so elitest and shit, like modern art critics who
are so far up their own arse they think shit on a stick is
the most visionary concept they have ever witnessed.

Music is music, if you like it you like it, if you don't you
don't. The very fact that some people who like Aphex don't
like Ae shows how you can't classify them as the same thing.
And to say it is all electronic music is bullshit as well.
You wouldn't class folk music in the same group as metal now
would you? So why, just because the computer is used as an
instrument, do people lump all electronic music together?

The whole thing that attracted me to the Warp label artists
was the fact that they were all doing their thing in a way
that made a joke out of genre's that the media invented.

electronic music just describes that all this music was made
using electronic means...we all know its got many totally
different aspects to it..but its just a general term..as
opposed to other stuff

offline ecnadniarb on 2002-07-11 11:24 [#00305584]

You gonna class n*sync as electronic?

offline Bob Mcbob on 2002-07-11 11:28 [#00305588]
Points: 9939 Status: Regular

youve got good points there ecnadniarb...but whats the
alternative? u cant have a different genre for each
artist....and u cant be without genres, how would u describe
the music? how will u find it in the shop?

offline Salma Hayek on 2002-07-11 11:29 [#00305589]
Points: 1056 Status: Regular | Followup to ecnadniarb: #00305584

no i class nsync as complete and utter bullshit

offline Salma Hayek on 2002-07-11 11:32 [#00305590]
Points: 1056 Status: Regular | Followup to Bob Mcbob: #00305588

i also agree ecnadniarb is right in someway..i dn't really
care wot the genres are ..its just good music..and who says
electronic music can't have acoustic instruments..it
does...

but also we do need genres to describe different styles even
if its not exactly accurate , which it can never be

offline ecnadniarb on 2002-07-11 11:34 [#00305591]
Points: 24805 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

I don't think there is a problem with having some genre's.
I just think it is fucking stupid classing Global Goon,
Autechre, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Prefuse73 etc. etc. as
belonging to the same genre. Their musical styles are too
varied.

btw, I think Squarepusher deserves his own genre, you never
know what the lad is gonna do next :o)

they might have different style, but they also have a common
similarity which is why ppl call them "electronic" and idm
and ambient etc...

PS again: i hate the term IDM!

This is all pointless. Genres are here for convenience (and
marketing purposes) so, from that perspective, GG and Ae are
in the same bag. That does not deny any of them their
uniqueness. Genress are just a handy shortcut in a
conversation, not firm categories. Argue about something
more intelligent, for chrissake

To be honest, it is only that I hate the term IDM and the
word electronica. When someone asks me the type of music I
listen to I would never reply with either of those terms.

Try Braindance

Actually I wouldn't say braindance either...I just say "here
listen, and throw them a CD"
