Melodies From mars intented to be used in videogames or as
a follow-up to I Care Because You Do, but was replaced by
Richard D James Album instead.
So he made both of those albums at the same time right? Then
why do they sound sooo different from each other?!
There's like NO way you can compare those albums with each
other imo... it's just something I've noticed, maybe you
guys can share your opinion on this...

yeah i like mfm, they are just different styles

he picked (his nose) the style he wanted to release at that
time

Most of the MFM tracks are erm...they sound like a bunch of
started tracks to me that he never bothered fiishing...dunno
though.

exactly!
That's what I was thinking of!
RDJA is so much better than MFM imo. The quality of RDJA is
10 times better!
Then again, that's probably why MFM wasn't released...

Your right Nexus 6

Although you got to admire the funkiness and the coolness of
MFM, and in terms of recording quality RDJA is 100000 times
better.

But keep in mind, that the MFM songs were ripped from a
tatty old tape that had been passed around to god knows how
many computer companies

was that sarcasum Nexus...if so you got me

and if it isn't yeah it is true, MFM was originally suppost
to be a computer soundtrack

It is an interesting listen, if only to see how great tracks
sound in the beginning, but I stand by my theory that they
are largely unfinished.

simplicity doesn't do it for me most of the time, I needs
something that amazes me, something that needs time to be
figured out...

MFM sounds different because it's VIDEOGAMES SONGS as you
had stated.

"MFM sounds different because it's VIDEOGAMES SONGS as you
had stated."

And why would that be? There are no rules or anything for
making music for videogames, a lot of videogames use normal
tracks that are already or could easily be on an album...

alot of tracks now use normal songs. take into consideration
the time in which the MFM tracks were made.

Nah, I think if Aphex Twin had sent it to ANY computer games
company they would have bit his hand off, if only to have
his name associated with their product. I honestly do think
it is a bunch of unfinished unreleased tracks that have
leaked...and because they are so basic they have been tied
to a story about RDJ wanting to make music for a computer
game.

Melodies from Mars

yeah, that's like 6 years ago....
Playstation was already out by then right?
And playstation uses normal songs most of the time...
If he'd made those tracks before the 90's I'd understand.
But that was 1994, he could've at least made some better
melodies and beats... imo

7 or 8 years ago...and the playstation came out in about 97
in the US and Europe, so it was still firmly the MegaDrive
and SuperNES era.

ok my conclusion: MFM is a weak unfinished album and
therefor it wasn't released, RDJA was way better and it'll
always be one of my favorite Aphex Twin albums...

RDJ is way better. I think there is a reaseon why MFM wasn't
released. Not very good, but kinda funny...

MfM was NOT intended to be a soundtrack for a videogame or
was ever sent to any videogame companies. That was just a
rumour/opinion of someone who heard it and it stuck. It was
given to a select few individuals, one of which trusted it
to someone who couldn't be trusted.

Joyrex: 1 -- rest of you lot: nil

:O]

Murray: What in the hell are those things in your avatar?

there's no way i'll ever believe that that one track on MFM
is a demo version of logon rock witch

and joyrex: it's venom from marvel superheroes, i do believe

heres my theory...after (and probably during) finishing 'i
care...' he started working on a bunch of simple videogame
soundtrack-inspired tracks (he's always seemed like a big
videogame fan) for fun...assembled them into a possible
future album...
but somewhere along the way..met up with squarepusher..and
if the little bit on the back of 'feed me' is true...was
blown away...enough so that he took tom's inspiration and
went and developed his own style of 'drill n bass'

another factor to consider is that a little after the
release of icbyd...the wire had this thing where they sent a
bunch of tracks by a few experimental artists (aphex
included) to stockhausen...to see what he had to say about
the artists he had inspired and to possibly offer some
advice (i think it was called 'advice to clever children')
and aphex was dissed pretty bad by stockhausen for using
'old repetitive post-african rhythms'
(the aphex tracks he heard were ventolin and alberto
balsalm..and maybe a few from saw2)
in aphex's response...he said that he was kinda
disappointed...(and he made some snide remark about people
not being able to dance to the piece stockhausen suggested
he listened to) but i think stockhausen's words affected him
more than he let on...

sorry, haven't botherd to finish reading thru every post...

MFM was/came out from a tape someone found/aquired
someplace/thru someone. I haven't heard all the tracks but
i can imagine their alright.

Supposedly it was a collection of music to highlight RDJ's
ability to produce music for games...i don't think there was
an intention 4 it to hit the publics ears..but it did. U
know APhex though, they're probably just some extra tracks
he had laying about....u know the deal...anywho l8ter

Only one thing is sure: MFM was the album between ICBYD and
RDJ ALBUM.
He has 2 tracks of RDJ ALBUM (fingerbib demo and logon rock
witch demo).
Probably Richard dind't like it so much and didn't release
it (as he did for ABB5)

How many album as MFM, ABB5, CAUSTIC WINDOW ALBUM, etc...
Richard made and we never listened...

When RDJ made MFM, ABB5, etc... couldn't know that a lot of
persons could listen his tracks with download from napster
or soulseek... These should be secret unreleased tracks,
'cos Richard couldn't know about Internet's download in
1995/1996, etc...
Internet is a great thing and we're all lucky persons...
