yeah, I know...doesn't make sense does it...you'd think that
it would make it stop working rather than the other way
round...

but it seemed to fix it for me...

i tried with the newer version : nothing
after installing zonealarm : nothing
... if i cant acces soulseek.org via IE i don't think the
program will work
it's strange... this is beginning to upset me, maybe i'll
re-install my system and see after...

Have you tried uninstalling Soulseek and then deleteing it's
dir (Program Files\SoulSeek)... might be worth a try...

Think you are right about it not working if you can't access
Soulseek.org from IE...

I've had some trouble accessing some big sites today (like
Google.com, Planet-mu) so looks like there may be some temp
problem on the net that's stopping you getting to SS...

I had that, but after it came back up I had to go back in
and reselect the server otherwise it kept coming up with the
problem.

My understanding is that if the SoulSeek client cannot
resolve the server's address when you launch it, then the
client will pop up a warning message and then exit. This
means that if soulseek.org is down when the client program
is launched, the client will error and close.

If you have the SoulSeek client program running, and
soulseek.org goes offline, then things like chatrooms &
searches come to a halt, but downloads in progress will
continue (as they're point-to-point between the clients).

Anyway, that's my guess..... I posted a msg earlier to ask
if it's possible for others to run the server code, so that
we're not all dependant on one box (soulseek.org) being up,
but not had a reply yet.

nir explained why there won't be multiple servers in the
future of soulseek faq.

I run an alternative file sharing server (opennap, not
soulseek) for the users of this message board. If you want
more info, email me or check out one of the threads on the
subject.

raimons: what OS are you on?...XP??

One other thing I did when I had my similar problem was turn
on XP's Internet Firewall thing, reboot & then turn it off
again....

Not sure if it did anything but it was either that or the
ZoneAlarm that fixed it...

Odd, I know...but it worked for me so worth a try....

(Soulseeks UP BTW....seems to have been all day by the looks
of my uploads/downloads...been logged in for ~24hrs now...)

@Inverted Whale : thanks for the link - interesting to learn
what nir thinks.

I appreciate the point about the donation system making it
tricky to run multiple servers. If nir figures out a way to
make it work, then the offer's there.

it's looking a lot more stable now too :) except for the
pretty frequent disconnects (it's either the kernel hack
we're using, the network card of the cables...) and the
occasional server crash as the system runs out of memory
we're up pretty much constantly. knock on wood, it should
keep up like this in the forseeable future.
