LFO - Frequencies was released in 1991 (one of the first British techno albums) at a time when dance music retail sales were really high. The LFO singles charted in the UK (LFO was 2 or 3 in the charts and was on Top Of The Pops in 1990). Rave 7"s and 12"s were selling 50-80,000 units and you could get warp singles in Woolworths. Frequencies was licensed by Tommy Boy in the states.. don't know if it was successful there though.
ffwd to 1998 & mhtrtc. Dance sales started their decline in late '96.. due to shifting markets and file sharing, there is no way even a moderately successful rock band could out perform an early 90s rave record sales. Its just totally different times.. MHTRTC is very succesful in today's market. It has out sold all other comparable records (apart from maybe the royskopp one).

what exactly does that mean and I doubt any warp release has sold that many, i mean they give away stuff to mail orders because I assume they have too many and no one will buy them.

Incunabula went straight to #1 when it came out, that must've reached the million mark, or well in the hundred thousands

lfo dominated the first 1/2 of warp's history and could not have fit the era better. i think lfo and now were the first 2 signed acts so it's logical that they'd also be 2 of the best selling.
