What music takes you away, and where does it take you?

So, what kinds of music sort of takes you away to different
places?

For me the big genre would have to be World Music... Passion
always takes me away to this barren desert in the middle
east somewhere, while something like the Afro Celts takes me
away to an African plain... the music just creates these
visual images, it's like I'm there...

more specific groups... Boards of Canada definately... there
music always seens to conjure up images of Canadian nature,
and all that good stuff... I listened to them today while
looking out my window at a mountain off in the distance
covered in trees, and it just seemed to fit!!

i don´t like being transported to physical places that
much. i prefer the kind of stuff that takes me back in
time, to old memories, old girlfriends, old friends, brain
damage...Either that or music that makes me feel mixed
emotions all at once. AFX does that on me...mixed
emotions..Music for me is like a feeling_amplifier, i like
when it does that in my head..like either a wayout or a
way_inn.....

know what i mean?

both for me...

both are good things... with this topic I meant anything...
if it takes you back to old memories and all that, it's just
as valid... anything like that...

hmm my fav would have to be bob marley - dreams of freedom
(ambient translations in dub)... the review from my site.

>>>

if you like ambient and reggae music, this album just might
satisfy both these prerequisites. bill laswell was chosen by
chris blackwell to do this album and laswell has delivered a
tastefully done adaptation. but be warned, if your looking
for a dancable/ high power album, this is not the one. this
is a "dreamy" ambient dub interpretation of marley's music.
the instrumentation has been taken from the old master tapes
and been given the "ambient dub" treatment, often heavy
effects are applied to the music (as you would expect in
dub). there is totally new percussion in a few songs and all
the bass work has been done by laswell himself. the vocals
on this album are primarly done by the i-threes, marley's
voice is often faint or not even in some songs. the ambient
components that run through the album were done by tetsu
inoue. these ambient sections often bring to mind a warm
tropical island, where everyone is celebrating into the
night, birds sing in the trees of the island forest while a
cold breeze softly blows across your body as the music
echoes into the distance... eh lost myself, sorry. this
album is best when used for a relaxing evening or when it's
time for a little *smoky, smoky*. personally this is my
favorite album (of all time), not because of technical
artistry, or that it's anything "groundbreaking" but just
the fact that i can put it on at anytime and be so
thoroughly satisfied with it.

music does both for me.....conjurs memories of the past,
sometimes right back to being in the car driving with the
top down with so and so......it's so cool because some tunes
can bring back such perfect memories! most are good, some
are sad tho. =(

music (and i know what you mean by the gabriel cd passion)
can take you to places where you might not have been, but it
so perfectly paints an image that you can see it so clearly.
sometimes i like listening to aphex outside, because i can
look up at all the stars (which i can see perfectly) and
just feel like i'm floating. music is magical.....the way it
can transport the soul is just BRILLIANT.....MAGIC =0)

There was a time when I'd put on Flying Saucer Attack's
self-titled album, light up a fat one, and I could go
anywhere I wanted. :)

My space flights are mostly grounded nowadays though!

there are times when the right music, in the right place can
take you just about anywhere...last year, i went to a
Jackson Pollock art exhibit, i had ICBYD on my
heaphones.......hmmmmmm, lovely.

music is like a pet.

and yes it does conjure up memories ... if it does take me
anywhere .. its not really anywhere specific, more an absent
state of mind ..

same here...it makes a lot more sense when you can see the
incredible 3D layering and how alive it feels; repro's etc
don't really cut the mustards...

(Same with Van G 's work...never rated him till I saw one in
the flesh...)...

most stuff on tango n' vectif takes me to another place, ah
those lovely sounds.....but in order to take me to the past
you would need something like loop da loop or fatboy
slim...the old skool dayz

SAW2 takes me places every time. It really is an amazing
album, I wish he'd do another one. It's the only album that
I can just lay there listening to without moving or
thinking. Crazy.

The AFX remix of Falling Free by Curve takes me right into a
subteranean narcotic dreamworld...

I want that played at my funeral!!!...I reckon it's one of
AFX's best ever tunes...

(plus Tha played at half-speed makes me go weak in the
head....coupled with a nice sub...mmmmmmmm...valium textured
tunes)...
