my friend has an ftp server set up, but we're having troubles getting it to work right.. i try to connect to it, but i keep getting remote socket errors...please help, if you can...

Be sure to set the port. My friend who runs an FTP server set his to 1983. Make sure your friend tells you what port he's running it on.
80 and 21 are popular (usually default) ports.

the firewall is probably not the issue, when behind a firewall it will give you non access or no acess errors, login tried and failed messages. On the other side it wil say failed to connect.
if its a remote socket error you need to set up the specific port... like Spookyluke said.
