Ctrl Alt Del, I know what sound you're talking about... the
nature of this sound makes me think that it could be
replicated/produced by modulated delay (i.e. flanging)

MD recorders are anywhere from around 150 to 500 bucks
depending on what features you want. Mine cost 200 dollars
including a 4 year warranty from best buy...

yep, there's some good ideas kickin around here -- i always
used to beat a rhythm with the coins in my pocket -- an old
idea i had was to start a track like a play -- in the street
or something, and then someone beat the rhythm with the
change in their pocket, then have it merge into real
percussion &tc-- so it would be like a daydream being made
real :)

TANDY/RADIO SHACK do a real neat mic for recording
enviromental sounds...I think it's called a PZM mic (not
100% on that) and it's flat...

I think they are only about £10 i.e. well cheap for a
mic... but apparently a lot of pros use them when capturing
sounds out n about...

You could go for one of those little digital notetakers that
you can pick up very cheap - check out Tandy...

i took my laptop to guitar center to record everything in
their drum section,
crunching cans, crumbling paper tin foil or anything of the
sort, dropping the mic on the floor, ive also circuit bent a
few things that make some crazy noise.
i took the laptop to my work too and recorded a blender,
quisonart, buzzing from the fridge, and all sorts of sounds
from the espresso machine. and the cash register too.

take random items and put them in various sizes of pots and
pans and roll them around and shake them.

ideas i have but havent tried. (they require mics that are
desposable)
1)crushing a mic in a trash compactor.
2)a mic in a blender
3)a mic in a microwave(that one might even mess the
microwave up, but im thinking the mic might pick up sounds
that arent there when the electrodes start shooting around)
4)how bout getting a really long mic chord(like 30 feet or
more) and throwing the mic out the window of a moving car.
5)hide a mic in a preschool classroom
6)descize a mic to look like something really odd and let
kids try and figure out what it is while youre recording
7)run over a mic
8)find a stair well that is really echoey and throw it down
the stairs
9)drag it behind your bike
10)shove it into the blades of a fan
11)various explosives attacked to the mic
12)shoot the mic
13)OH I JUST HAD ANOTHER ONE! put a tiny kkk outfit on a mic
and leave it in a black neiborhood(obviously dont let people
know its yours, this needs a wireless system) and record
what they say and how they trash it :D

ALL OF THESE IDEAS WOULD MAKE A WONDERFUL CONCEPT NOISE
ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW TO MIS USE A MICROPHONE!!!!! MY GOD
IM GOING TO DO IT SO DONT TAKE MY IDEA!!!!

STEAL MY CONCEPT IDEA IM GOING TO START WORKING ON IT SOON

ive circuit bent a small radio and a toy electronic guitar
type keyboard. i know very little of what im doing but i
read a little up on how potentiometers work and capacitors
and what not and then i just started connecting wires where
they didnt belong till i heard noise. i dont have amazing
results, just "virtually" uncontrollable noise. then i
sample it.

i didnt have any luck with the math and spell. and i killed
the toy drum machine.

um... part of the fun of making your own samples is the fact
that you know they are your own. if i gave them to you then
they would be yours. :)

I sample from really strange things. I stripped all the
plastic off a cheap computer mic and whipped it against the
wall a few times. Sounded very cool ;)
