As they say in Germany, if there’s a Nazi at the table and 10 other people sitting there talking to him, you got a table with 11 Nazis. while i'll understandably grant a pass here because, well, this is GERMANY... isolating people, even extremists, just builds the raw material for another jan 6 beer hall putsch. people who are -- sorry, it's true -- poor, uneducated, racist, etc. complain about the niggers stealing their jobs over beers, and the bubble becomes an echo chamber where they validate each other, just like fox news and reddit. then it reaches a point where they're operating on a fundamentally different reality, and even a conversation is... ...but if everyone mixed it up and timeshared the nazis some of the normal reality everyone else lives in would rub off on them, a vague potential to talk them out of dumb things. then what germany's afraid of: some of the nazi would rub off on everyone else, sure. but a healthy society will digest this like a donut and poop it out eventually refusing to dine with nazis is like refusing to accept a wart growing on your toe is a part of your body. they're still humans on planet earth and ignoring them may actually just spiral them just a thot. |

i go back to the moment i stepped out from a high school reunion meetup a year or so ago and promptly wound up talking with some guy who was obviously a drug dealer, selling... cigarettes... re-rolled at the end with... well, coke or meth, he was clearly Up. and he's very deeply against flouride. it's poison in the water. and he's telling me about his intense hippie overkill reverse osmosis system (yeah, probably meth) at home because he has a daughter. i comment that flouride prevents cavities, it actually really works, you're going to find more cavities in areas where they don't flouridate. i always make sure to use mouthwash with flouride and if you care about your daughter's teeth... ...then i remember i'm talking to a guy who has bad drug user teeth (yeah, meth) and feel awkward for a moment. he seems to feel it too but moves on: YEAH, but you don't drink mouthwash. it says call poison control if you drink it, that's because flouride is poison and i thought a moment. then said: you may actually be right about that and he might. shortly after that i walked back into the reunion with free drinks and everyone all dressed up. it was a charming interlude |

that he smoked a few of his special cigarettes and it was done casually but the fact that he had a bunch of re-rolled zigs was very clearly, prominently flashed to me, presumably so i could indicate interest in purchase. after the second one he stopped with the flash because he was actually rather beside himself that someone was taking the moment to listen to him and seriously consider his opinion. later, i saw him across the street, some sort of exchange, someone walks off with one of his cigarettes. or maybe it was coke. coolies, that's what they're called? can anyone shed any insight? if it helps: he was a ginger |

that, oh, right, kvetching. the kvetching circle concept, that's one of the singlehandedly most brilliant bits of mental engineering i've seen in a whole decade.... ...but, i think a certain amount of racial bashing, homophobia, nazi nonsense, should almost be taken as kvetching. that there's anger behind these things, and if you just kindly listen rather than yell at them for being a nazi; invalidate their feelings, etc... eventually, they'll calm down, and they'll actually be somewhat fond of you for putting up with it. they'll figure maybe you're a nazi too? but you're not parroting it too. you're not shutting it down, either, and what are you? and then now that everyone's feeling a bit more abstract, less emotional, let it drift into some sort of intellectual debate where there's genuine interest on both sides. if you get this far, you won't have to scrape around for it; it'll simply happen you can feel like a wise tit and say "dolly llama.cpp says you can learn something from anyone" but getting it out of people is another matter entirely |

in any case, i suspect the photo is some sort of staged cultural tableau that i don't understand. i half wondered if someone here would know, really. that i can find this photo hilarious, ridiculous, and perhaps understand it too? these things are not incongruent. by understanding where a hilarious, ridiculous thing comes from, you can craft stronger, more hilarious, more ridiculous oddiments |
