Jam with Brian Eno

I was doing the music to a documentary film recently, and
Brian Eno was vaguely involved as he was friends with
another guy composing the music with me (although we didn't
actually use any of his material in the end, because,
wonderfully weird as it was, he didn't even bother watching
the film while he farted out his beautiful drones and
glitches...)

I somehow ended up having a jam with him because he was
creating some nice gamelan-ey minimal loops, and intruding
with some Nord-Lead 3-driven FM drones proved fairly
irresistable. He was a nice guy, slightly quirky (when he
came in he barely said hello-he just noticed some humming
machinery and told the engineer to "record that now, they'll
want to use it later") and starting producing some pretty
horrid synth noises on a DX7-like soft synth thing.

Our "track" ended up being 27 minutes long, and he was
strangely happy with it. I've always been a big fan, so for
that to come out of the blue was a rather wonderful
surprise.

Best get back to working in a shitty bookshop and smoking
myself to oblivion now, now that's over and done and dusted.
:-S

It would be great if it actually came out in some form. Even
though he suggested putting it out, I'm not getting excited
until definate steps are taken for a release. Even though
some cool things have happened in music as of late, so many
things fall through.

As long as you didn't follow through whilst sitting next to
Eno, I've read he has a sensitive nose.

couldn't he have just not farted, instead of immediately not
shitting his pants?

unless that's what you read as being "Jam with Brian Eno".

It could be an interesting ambient conceptual piece, Farting
with Brian Eno, a serious of pan-sensory duets.

Oh no, Swears will accuse me of being a budget Stephen Fry /
Red Dwarf / some other "old" thing that's now "not cool".

I know what it's like.
My house is like that in the evening.
I can't answer the phone in the livingroom.
Apparently it's "too cold".

yeah man.. cut it up and make something of it. Send him a
couple of versions and get his approval and then shop it
around or put it up on your own.

Can't hurt any... and fans of Eno will probably flock to it
regardless

"starting producing some pretty
horrid synth noises on a DX7-like soft synth thing." Yes,
I've heard he loves FM synthesis. God only knows why, it
sounds shit most of the time.

Still, cool story.

oh don't start dogging on FM. some of us learned alot from
those DX-7 machines.. there was a time when they were
considered LEADING EDGE!...

Yeah, FM synthesis can suck, but then again, my DX11 has the
sweetest pads ever.

Oh, I know that. It's just one of those things where (unlike
other "primitive" electronic instruments), I can't see (or
rather hear) any charm to it and now we can do lush pads a
lot better in other ways, I see no reason to use it. I only
really use FM (at least in such a way that it's recognisable
as FM synthesis) when I'm going for an old messed up sound.

I think that particularly synth stabs done on it have a very
unpleasent abbrasive quality (without actually being
nasty/aggro enough that I'd want to use them for DnB or
anything menacing).

I really must finish off a few of those techno tracks for
you. A couple of those use a lot of fm, but it's not really
recognisable as such.

Actually, though I can see where you're comming from, I made
a lot of the dark drones for this film project using FM
synthesis; it can produce some wonderfully metallic, dense,
paddy sounds.

I'm really in dept to a producer called "Ivor Guest" for
these experiences. His myspace can be found here:
