A ZIP Code is a system of postal codes used by the
United States Postal Service (USPS). Introduced on July 1,
1963, the basic format consisted of five digits.

screw a private island -- i want my own zip code

then people could just write nothing but a five-digit number
on an envelope -- no name, no address -- slap a stamp on it,
and it'd get to me

00000bvious choice
but probably impossible because it will break computer
systems trained to accept this as invalid

famous story: some gentleman got the custom license plate
"NULL" and promptly received 50 traffic tickets that the
system had lost track of

that, steve wozniak, apple co-founder, aka woz, right? he
was never all there after he crashed his private plane. he
was over as an engineer. but he remained his charming self
and moved on to things like, the only ID he carries is a
made-up card that says "Laser Safety Technician" and there's
a photo of him wearing an eyepatch on it. he always carries
around lots of $2 bills and enjoys paying for things with
them [look this shit up if you don't believe me].

the other steve, the less clever one, he would buy a new
mercedes every month or something because state law said you
didn't have to have a license plate for the first 30 days on
a new car, and you knew it was him because he would then
reliably park in the handicap space [again, look this shit
up if you don't believe me]

and this is just my version of being a jerk -- i want my own
zip code

that i think this is, like, unarguably possible if you're
croesus mode; that you count your bank balance in the tens
of millions. look up "city of industry, california" which i
discovered as an oddity when my job required me to get into
zip codes like that

the gist is you'd need to buy up millions of land. at that
point... oh, bureaucracy, it'd take years. but you'd just
unarguably walk to your own personal zipcode with the right
property basis and a few years.

i was going postal to see if it suits me for a brief time
and learned a lot about the city and its inhabitants. the
mailman knew it all (or at least thought he did)... whos a
criminal, whos cashing in the welfare twice, why there is no
names on that certain house (high ranking police officer).
that by law mail is only valid in court if you have the
right name and surname written on your box. do you want to
go incognito? im sure there is ways to do that in a mailing
way. many firms just go by a number. like a p.o. nr.

i simply love esoteric things. that a brief stab making
money off flipping stuff on eBay, shipping is a serious cost
and so i go all dweeb on the various types of boxes USPS
offers -- many of which you can get for free upon request,
importantly

the types are like -- 1, 2, A1, VHS tape box, shoe box,
small flat rate box, on and on, and i am already, like...
delighted. this is insane. i love this

A1, that's a paper size, i believe. VHS tape box, just lol,
random. 1, 2, just sequential integers probably

then there is one like "1080" or something, and it gets me
to the point where i actually asked the clerk what this was
next time i was in the post office

and he says

it's the volume in cubic centimeters.

i didn't even think to ask why. because this just absolutely
made my week already. literally gives me the giggles, this
stuff

so, yes, i understand that. if it weren't so out of the way
i'd consider working for the post office for a year or two,
just because... i want to see inside this gloriously
esoteric machine

the the city of industry thing came out of... oh, i won't
even. but it's basically about legal stuff that depends on
zipcode and i wander into city of industry, ca and it just
turns everything i thought i knew into bizarro world. and
then also, very quickly, realizing: yes, you could get your
own zipcode. with enough dosh

i guess i blame the desantis/disney thing for bringing that
up. a special economic zone is not uncommon. iger's not
making that up

maybe some of what's funny there is missing -- not only was
the box just some incomprehensible number, but the number
was based off the metric system. at the US post office

nevermind. i'll be off in a corner being amused

that, oh, disney. hugely conservative company. also bizarro
world that they're being hounded as woke central, because
no fucking way are they, you know? but i also cop to
feeling the side, it's an american icon. these are the
people who cared enough to bring an elephant into the studio
to make sure dumbo walks correctly. that same as i am
vehemently against censoring agatha christie, closing splash
mountain is like... fuck off, i know all sorts of shit and
even i didn't know the obscure racist thing you're shutting
this down for. and now you're doing the same shit you're
yelling about; shutting them down for speech as you yell
about them shutting people down for speech

then city of industry: would you like to have a strange town
with only 200 official residents but thousands of daily
human presences, across a bizarre intense cluster of, like
chinese outposts? and that since you have your own town, you
can create all your town laws? someone did this,
effectively, because they could, and it was good business.

so perhaps something for that other thing. your thorn in the
side economic outfit growing like a company, buying up small
irritating patches of land in order to sue polluting
companies further -- maybe you could do something if you
created greta, california right next to city of industry,
and now you're making your own laws, thanks, which percolate
up to the state level and beyond?

that, you know, simply because you're trying to save the
planet doesn't mean you can't run it like a corporation. a
gobsmackingly large corporation

In the California State Legislature, the City of Industry
is in the 22nd Senate District, represented by Democrat
Susan Rubio, and in the 57th Assembly District, represented
by Democrat Reggie Jones-Sawyer.[23]

In the United States House of Representatives, the City of
Industry is split between California's 32nd congressional
district, represented by Democrat Brad Sherman and
California's 39th congressional district, represented by
Democrat Mark Takano.[24]

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services
operates the Pomona Health Center in Pomona, serving
Industry.[25]

The United States Postal Service City of Industry Post
Office is located at 15559 Rausch Rd.

- your own state representatives
- your own post office
- but we've outsourced health care as usual

wikipiedia citing like 2008 and they've obviously
kept a low profile. even the wikipedia article itself feels
like fabricated horseshit, like

For convenience many Chinese entrepreneurs and staff live
in nearby Rowland Heights, Hacienda Heights, West Covina,
Diamond Bar and Walnut.[30]

for convenience, right. it's because you need to pwn the
whole population of the town to keep control and if you let
other people start officially residing here you'd lose
control of it. so, FOR CONVENIENCE -- everyone that works
here lives somewhere else. for convenience. legal
convenience

absolutely mum on who actually owns the own, on wikipedia.
i'm kind of curious now. but guarantee you it's someone;
this is not democracy.

oh. i forgot

The City of Industry also features a fake McDonald's
restaurant that is used strictly for filming movies and
commercials

like i said. it's fucking bizarro world. population went
down from ~800 in 2000 to like 200 now. no way someone
doesn't own this whole thing. and it may not even be any
sort of grand manipulation scheme, more just "it's good
business to run a city for profit" and welcome to delta city
etc etc

The city's zoning is primarily devoted to business: 92%
is industrial, 8% is commercial.[27] The few residences in
the city either existed before incorporation, are on
properties adjacent to either Industry Hills Golf Club,
Industry Hills Recreation Center or in the small
neighborhood adjacent to City Hall. In addition, there are
residents at the El Encanto Healthcare Center, a nursing
home owned by the city.[28]

i see, i see it clearly now: 1) handful of OG has been
O'Grandfathered in 2) the people that actually own the city
have vacation houses they never use next to the golf course
3) then they stash mum in a nursing home there because you
know she'll do the right thing and vote for her #1 son

then you gradually, inexplicably shunt it down from a mere
800 people, to 200, over 20 years, and yes, you have this
quite in your pocket now. i have to admit a grudging
admiration
