fatness for music

what exactly is it? you all know when you hear a fat bass
or a thick lead, and some synths are just disgusting
but it's hard to define what makes it fat. phat if
you want i suppose

alternatively what music makes you gorge on dominos

are we hearing it just fill the stereo field? certain magic
frequencies or intervals? some reverb witchery?

you're focused on the synth and the bass

but the nerd chill you directly linked is phat in the
DRUMS. That's when it's the best, B

The fatter you are and the earlier you might die is cool

oh just first track

sampling an analog source can sound just as good as an
analog source, but it can get repetitive, and i simply could
not resist sampling this comic book guy reviewing an analog
synth guitar pedal and insisting it was Real Analog, No,
Sampling, True, Phatness

and i am just talking out of my butt. but i think it goes
back to when digital synths first showed up, and they were
cool for a while, but then, actually, this is like some
casio phase distortion synthesis shit, it worked for a while
in TMBG trax but really this sounds thin, tinny, tin busy

and so then we're humping the old stuff, and my real feeling
is, like -- there's something you get in a physical circuit
humming around. that i'm a fan of the idea that
consciousness actually incorporates physical modelling, like
reverb in a giant 400lb plate instead of a software model.
it's a strained analogy, but imagine if you had a tiny plate
reverb in your brain and part of the secret sauce is the
brain just goes and runs the sound through that, and that's
how it knows

but the whole phatness thing -- shut up. it can get deep,
like synths having a personality, but it's mostly that
they're cheap old noisy circuits and whoever designed it
spent quite a bit of time being like "this is shit, but
what's the best shit i can make it?" while designing it and
so it's fuzzy and noisy but finally it stays in tune and the
guy designing it is like "good enough"

fourth track, just a shout-out from a previous tangent, in
a thread, i dunno, it was named similar... "druk q s" and
then i've sampled the zelda noise and try that on your quote
unquote anonymous soundclot. i'm comfortable in feeling it's
both clever and something his nibs could never get away with
himself

it's dr. drew saying druk q s if anyone cares.

Kool Rock-Ski sole survivor

it sounds like the timecop guy that did the equalizer music.
and this is like, that was a good video to post, but sorry,
i'm getting horribly distracted in synths and drum machines
in the soundtrack

and just to be an extra, extra dick

LAZY_TITLE

shuki levy from the french version of the inspector gadget
soundtrack, clearly on a full decked out analog setup,
modulars. it sounds FANTASTIC

you may have a point, i've never really used the spectral
analyzer much in wavelab but i bet it's "fuller" for an
obese synth part. thing is, sometimes synths that have had
the middle totally filter-scraped can be very fat, as long
as they get backed by bass eventually. i'd say it's more
than just harmonics

...and, well, sure. white noise also has rich harmonic
content. but effectively something something overtones and
pleasant fuzziness

and also, that track i posted before your post there, also
yes, that's a real bass guitar in there. but the way the
synths stack with the vocals, actually

compression and distortion

dillinja used distortion a lot to get a louder fatter sound

too much compression and distortion can make it sound not
good though

What's better? A fat bass or a thick lead? I don't know, it
depends on what I'm gonna do with it...

Fat bass is the sound of an elephant farting

i like both thick leads and fat bass.. like i said, just
hearing it makes me crave dominos

so when you say thicker (bass or lead) are you saying
there's more of it? i.e. what about phat

is phat because it's a big sound in the sense that you can
hear it easily?
that makes total sense - phat bass is a _presence_ in the
mix

The most phattest thing is having a fat ass from eating too
much Dominos and not getting off your ass to go get some! I
know, i'm so clever...

fat bass is just an illusion that makes you want more
bread.

fat bass. if it's got big room sounding synths then yeah
phat sounds like 'phat'. fat in the real world sounds like
this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hIkZjM_n6Q)

Fat bass is like a hotdog...flavorful and tasty!

I've always said "Phat" as in Fucked up.

Phat Bass is like a Hot Dog, you just want more. And what
do they put on their? Ketchup. And so we say "Fat ass
bass" which is "Ketchup bass".
