i think they should force filmmakers to match the exact percentage of at least 100 of the 2.454.776 minorities on this planet, all complete with their heritage certificates to avoid cultural appropriation and percentages of heritage, sexual orientation and color grade. i know this is quite a task. this could be done though will the installation of a complete and regularly updated database of every persons heritage, sexual orientation etc. so the ai then could calculate the exact amount of combined heritages inside each person and fulfill the perfect quota inside an ensemble. furthermore should one or more persons in the movie cheat on their heritage certificates the movie shall then be burned and censored and the whole crew be banned from making films ever again. |

i guess. if i had to attempt to be constructive this is a stick. quotas or else. very awkward for everyone but perhaps if you were more like "movies that demonstrate an arguable devotion to diversity will be skipped ahead in the queue" the carrot might be more palatable for all |

i mean, that must suck if you're a movie producer. that, oh, this guy i worked with for fifteen years, reliable on the lights, but no other way, i have to replace him to meet the quota. and now i have to start from scratch with someone else. and then, imagine you are HR -- ghastly thot, i know -- for some production and there are 400 people and you have to keep track of everyone's ethnicity so the whole thing doesn't get blammed from the oscars. and gosh that must suck but yeah. apologize about your requirements, oscars. you've had a change of heart and you want to celebrate diversity via a very real and potent force: the cage-fight for the spotlight. that we'll jump the movies that show a commitment to diversity ahead. and then, sorry, no questions. and leave it vague as to how anyone is to do that and leave them off in a corner to go nuts with anxiety over it and stew up... well, most of the ideas will be shit -- 1/3 of our staff are people we flew in from a war-torn country etc -- but someone will come up with something proper and you slap an especially large ribbon on that. and then there are the rest of the normal awards. and just keep going each year nudging people. the staffing will sort itself out within five years |

i'm not saying put anything to any actual scale. in fact, i've specified: be vague. that, oh... the old method for oscar nomination is to leave all the contenders locked in a room with a pa- with a metric shit-ton of bricks and the last few standing are the nominees. the new method is: instead of a pile of bricks, just say "most diverse wins" and they'll promptly clobber each other trying to do it further and deeper by not specifying it they're not sure how far to go and since you've made it a contest for the shiny spotlight they'll all fear someone else will go further and thus it's much better than a quota because a potent combo of greed and terror will drive some genuine innovation in diversity. and absolutely no algorithms, no. that there is no actual standard, really -- you're just looking to reward whoever climbed to the top of the pile. and maybe politely not notice the bloody brick they're still clutching |

i suppose my rough plan is: help diversity; destroy the oscars. "most diverse wins" would artistically run the oscars into a corner within a few years. by the time it finally implodes the staffing problem should be fixed. after that you'll need to find another cloying anachronism to cannibalize for nutrients |

it seems out of the question we need quotas at work. equality in daily life is not a given. im not sure quotas in oscar criterias are a necessity. art and entertainment ought to be free. now with society developing, naturally, oscars adapt to it, probably due to marketabilty, so its kind of a self regulating thing. it might be a tad clumsy on the way, still could turn out quite well. we´ll see if lawrence fishburn finally gets that trophy and if they send the invitation to the right guy. |
