Been playing this. Only 3.99 on the psn store. Much better
gameplay than the modern doom.

Resident evil 3 demo is out. Pretty good fun

Yes, Doom 64 is great. I think a lot of people (myself
included) didn't bother with it at the time, as they
presumed it was going to be yet another inferior console
port of an already old game, with some slightly updated
sprites.

It was only years later that I found it was fundamentally a
'lost' Doom game. I bought a Hori N64 pad just to play it
properly. If Corona-induced lack of work carries on, I was
going to get my N64 down from the loft for the wife to play.
I will fish Doom 64 out at the same, thanks for the
reminder! :)

fallout 3 is a tough bastard to get to run on modern windoze
10
i finally got it to stop crashing when i clicked "new game"
now it's crashing in combat regularly and i'm only at level
3 or 4 in greyditch
i already set busethreadedai=1 and iNumHWThreads=2, still
crashing
anyone cracked this nut more thoroughly?

Bagged doom eternal and got this free, not played it
before.

Doom eternal is overwhelming but I’ve only played about
half an hour.

Have got the VR headset out for something to do so might get
doom 2016 vr for that

wow i never considered this to be a thing.
i was thinking back in the early 3d fps era
there was no way i would prefer any joystick or controller
over mouse and keyboard and i still kind of do prefer being
able to do a swift mouse swing to scan the area for a huge
amount of fps,
but i completely forgot that classic doom didnt even use
mouse controls.
and the id era was right before that.
im getting old.

10 years ago i got doom64 from a friend whom i lent my n64
with all my games (about 16 carts) it came back without
mariogolf and doom64 instead. sold the doom64 for about
25€ + shipping soon after.
cut a similar deal for duke nuke em 64. dont regret both
deals. especially not duke nukem 64, cause it was badly cut
and didnt have a level editor as the pc version had.

Should buy it really. I bought all the Dooms on switch.
Though I’m terrible at Doom (2016).... gives me motion
sickness. And I die. All the time.

The new Woolfenstein was better to play. Almost finished
that one. Got really far but got lost in the level design
and thought ah fuck it.

from my experience from n64 downwards
flatscreens dont do the trick,
but maybe you will find settings on the tv
that make it worthwhile.

picked up a couple of crts from the streets, private ads,
and welfare spots (when they still took upon those)
now i have like five in the basement and two in the flat.
i see maybe 10 crts per year standing on the street waiting
for pickup by the junk department.
so any time i can i just grab ´em.
theyre so gloomy and colorful.
perfect for old television shows, cartoons
and irreplaceable for 8 to 16-bit era consoles.

according to digital foundry, they may even be better for
modern gaming. Something about high refresh rates and low
input lag. I have 100hz Sony CRT. It's the bomb.

also colour reproduction is v good on them afaicr, so
colours pop nicely, good contrast ratio

yeah stumbled on an article saying its the bomb.
what resolution are these though?
theyre talking about pc monitors not old tv´s right?
tv´s highest res is 576p.
used one for gaming in the windows xp era and to watch
downloaded tv, which looked great back then but ultimately
was rendered obsolete with much higher resolutions being the
new standard.

i am a bit skeptical playing modern HD resolution games with
16:9 aspect ratio on 4:3 crt´s. dont want to go back to the
old narrowed down view of field. refresh rate seems fine on
my flatscreens, wouldnt notice any difference anyway since
my hardware acceleration is stone age, but i think that was
another point they were making, that lower resolution output
can focus more on brilliance in color. however woulndt that
mean loss of detail an texture?

Yes I guess the resolution had a limit. But don’t be
mistaken (your old monitor was not obsolete), newer games
can go pretty low. When Rust got too heavy for my machine,
Id play it on the lowest 4:3 aspect ratio to get decent
frames.

I do have crt monitors, with 1024/768 resolution but the
Sony is a TV, which happens to be in 16:9 ! Don’t want to
lie to you, but I think it is 480p. No VGA port so Ive yet
to plug a pc into it. My sis gave me her old ps2, so been
using it for that. So not actually utilising that 100hz.
Though I want to see if I can somehow hook a pc up to it
with some converter some time.

Ill watch that DF video again later to refresh my memory on
the benefits

yaeh, wanna check what they were really on about.
common crt monitors are probably easy to come by aswell.
dont know if i can make room for yet another monitor
though.

you can connect a tv with your pc
via any video card with composite or s-video output.
currently have two connected that way.
one i put into a arcade cabinet, the other for watching old
tv stuff and dreamcast emulation.
however i have windows xp running on both of them.
been trying to hook up a windows 7 via numerous cards,
adapters and any kind of cable combination. eventually read
up into it to find out that effort is mostly useless since
any windows os above xp/vista doesnt support crt tv output
anymore. then i found some folks been able do accomplish it
by a certain hack soft manually adjusting the khz settings
of windows. i found that software, but have not been able to
get it to work. avoided special scaling adapters cause they
cost an arm and a leg and often dont really do what they
supposed to, plus every year there seems to be one coming
out that is best and i want a permanent and authentic
solution.

N64 controller Pak arrived today. It has the kid's name on
it in pen. "Ayani"
I hate that kid and the person who didn't advertise this
graffiti clearly. Probably one of mermaidman's cousins.

Ayani is a muslim girl name and it is an Arabic originated
name with multiple meanings. Ayani name meaning is
politeness and the associated lucky number is 6. Ayani grew
up and had 9 kids, all on welfare. Sadly she died of
coronavirus in 2020.

I want to drive win 10 on that crt. Sounds like it’s more
complex than I originally anticipated.

Points: 7624 Status: Lurker | Followup to Portnoy: #02597971 | Show recordbag

yeah theres cons on every solution.
- use win 10 and you will have to either get along well with
hacking the os into the right khz and tv detection or buy an
expensive converter,
- use win xp and some new programs, games or codecs wont be
supported anymore, i even had issues trying to log into
netflix

programmed some retro games for example which use html based
engine and i was dire to see how it looks on a crt,
but it wont execute on win xp as standalone file.
for some quirky reason it functions well if i play it online
on the same xp setup and i was happy to see the picture look
as great as i hoped.

i didnt even bother with multi boot machines, because i dont
want to mess up my working pc. think it wouldnt even have
space for multiple graphics cards.

as you said its complex and i figure there might be more
solutions out there if you dig deep enough.

all the retro matter is fascinating and i wouldnt ever play
a game stretched to the wrong aspect ratio,
or something brutal like that but,
at some point it just seems sensible to
stop looking for perfection.
if you got a game thats fun to play, just play and forget
about pixel perfect, intended resolutions,
rgb over composite and the likes
and simply enjoy like your ten years old :)

I can't deal with stretch images. I don't mind a black bar,
but when it stretches that 4:3 to 16:9 - that's when I opt
out. It looks too weird. Strange how even some remasters
don't take that into consideration (Looking at you KOTOR).

best thing to do in that case would be to travel back in
time, install all the games and then never connect that
computer to the internet ever again.

this seems like an appropriate place to post this

LAZY_TITLE

i feel for these chaps. i named some track after 'em in 2012
or so, because i thought the place was cool. the name was
quite apt at the time -- to get to the store, you had to
duck around plaster fun time and some thai restaurant, take
the stairs to a basement area and then suddenly it's just
nerd chaos. a counter with ancient console carts below the
deli glass, banks of PCs, people playing DDR. a fridge full
of caffeine that you are supposed to pay for but no one is
really watching

then they moved to the mall, actually took someone on a
first date there. then they moved to a shittier location in
the mall. then they moved to... fucking waltham?

if waltham is now their only remaining location, and it's
closed now, they are probably p. fucked which is sad because
if i ever did want to buy an n64 this would be the place to
go to avoid fucking ebay

came around watching that digital foundry video of control
played with a trinitron pc crt. they mentioned the name of
that crt and the game so many times it made me wonder if
they were just promoting it, with that clever vid assuming
it might go viral.

tried to remember the time i went from crt to led and that
was around the time fallout 3 was out. 1st time i finished
it on a crt. it was effing great.
then i bought my first led and with the higher resolution of
course my pc kinda ached the frames out. edges and polygon
structures became more visible. it wasnt a revelation, but
even back then i kinda prefered it over the crt, even if the
4:3 glowy crt kind of fit the retro theme of fallout 3,
the larger field of view just was still a game changer.
and 16:9 pc crt´s are a rare breed and weigh a ton and if
it werent for that vid id never even thought about getting
one.

anyway, conclusion for me is, the vid:
1. is appetizing for better picture quality and
performance.
2. makes me sad how bigger and flatter screens still have
not
lost their flaws (blacks & refresh rate, motion blur)
3. pc crt are not gonna be a long term option even if they
may be worthwhile to use em if when they´re around, because
no one is gonna stop the future, i dont wanna go back to
small over big displays.

Are you still using that same led? With the exception of the
laptop screen in the compaq I bought in 2010, im still using
my first 24” samsmgun led monitor bought around 2013. And
it holds up, even though the colours are very bland….

Yeh doubt those crts will make a comeback…. These days
we’re getting oled or micro-led or whatnot. Prettier, more
energy efficient displays… expenny though… I appreciate
how cheap u can pick a led up for

Ok, my dad gave me his older hp laptop (4:3 - still works,
except for the keyboard....) around 2007ish… that might be
my first encounter with led…. In case u were wondering!
