Any (suspected) downplaying of racism just makes me hella mad. Saying the article is extreme is tone policing. I'd say just look at what the article tries to get across. And don't judge its methods: dismantling centuries of oppression and collective gas lightning isn't easy. In the process of doing that someone may sound harsh. Roger Wilco: yes, that's the defensiveness. Good that you spot it, now try to do something productive with it. Taking in this information is a good first step. |

The author is British and wrote a book 'On Race, Identity and Belonging.' I guess i can understand not wanting to be read the lesson by yankees, I'm sure it was published in the NYT for reasons. Here I have think here about author, who wrote an incredible book on race and the Netherlands, she first published it in English, in the US, because she suspected Dutch publishers wouldn't dare to take it on. In the Dutch publication that did get out now, she explains all the fragility the English book in the Netherlands brought up (I can't and don't want to talk for her, but it's akin to the Robin DiAngelo video: people just can't think beyond the personal. So, like, they think she wrote a scientific book of great insight just because she was slighted some time on the street, you know). I guess you are knowlegable on this subject, but I thought you attacked the article on weak grounds, so that's how I got to fragility. That was probably the wrong conclusion. |
