very nice project would have been cooler if they created original circuits and built a super synth to afx's spec. like an elektron analog four but with at least 16 voices and loads of inputs and outputs with a drum section. like an all in one music production tool. |

personally, i always felt the GX-1 was a bit of a white elephant. if you asked me, "would you like to have my fully-tuned GX-1?" my answer would be, "that's super nice of you, but no thanks." rdj himself said something like, "yeah, if you want to program a patch, well, it only has one "custom preset," you have to pop the lid and turn trimpots with a small screwdriver. all of this sounds like a gigantic pain in the ass. this is before looking at upkeep, even -- it's a giant, fussy beast. i have a small apartment and no ability to maintain such a machine. or, rather, i do suppose i could figure it out, if i quit my job and plowed my limited funds into some more professional test gear. aphex, i am sure, has the physical space. no day job, so plenty of time to take upkeep seriously. money to hire someone if he gets stuck pretty much, it's like the CS80, but about ten times as stupid unless you're rich(ard) and have a fair amount of experience working on synth hardware |

i would eat my words for an EMS synthi 100, however. years ago, not breathing dave sent me some photos of him 'round back of jack dangers' synthi 100 with a solering iron, doing some mods. i was infinitely more jealous of him in that moment than i ever was of afx's gx-1. didn't aphex have a synthi 100? didn't he sell it? if so, he's an idiot |

his selling the synthi 100 was rather anecdotal, but there was a vemia link i clicked on that did make it seem rather legitimate. i dunno, i could be missing it. i was never hugely into FM. the synthi 100 is a subtractive mainframe; perhaps if i were into FM as much i'd see something i was missing in the gx-1. but from my current view of the world, the gx-1 is overpriced, expensive to maintain, and incredibly user-unfriendly beyond the preset cartridges. perhaps, if i weren't so halfassed about FM, i'd see it. perhaps it's just that it's doing everything analog; GX-1 takes the condom off of DX-1. i dunno. i really don't i would take an hour with a synthi 100 over a week with a GX-1. i'm not particularly good at playing multiple keyboards at once. knobs, though, i seem to scale better. the patch panel reminds me of those rubber-band/nail grid toys from kindergarten, and i know i would love it. versus going round back with a small screwdriver to adjust resistors. you'd have to know exactly what you were going for, or it'd be maddening i've been going on a bit. i'll summarize: i love subtractive, i'm familiar with FM but not particularly masterful, why is the GX-1 anything but shit compared to the synthi 100? thx afx fan |

when the fam was at a node of the now-defunct US chain "Tweeter," i was, i dunno, 9 or 10. the sales rep smartly separated me from my parents and sat me down in a demo room full of all the high-end shit, playing "Jurassic Park" on, i do believe, fucking laserdisc. they used it as a sound-system demo -- when the water jiggles in the mud of the t-rex footprint in the first third of the moment, that's where they would have been all -- "yeah, sir! you feel that bass?" but i was just enclosed in a reasonably soundproof room listening to this loudly, by myself. it was, i have to say, a particularly great way of first watching jurassic park. |

it seriously fueled an obession that lasted almost two decades i got an SGI o2 at a swapfest. they were using o2's as general desktops, amidst building one of the first render clusters for a movie a couple photos in really says it all -- just an ugly concrete room full of computers and more computers, we need more jurassic park also broke protocol in the sense that pretty much everything you see was an actual thing. the "i know this, it's a unix system" moment featured some "3D file explorer" that was not just some movie shit, but a demo program that came with the OS. the o2 was one of the few SGIs that did ps/2, SVGA, instead of whatever the fuck their k/m standard was and 13w3. i very carefully torrented ISOs of the decade-old OS trying to get 3D file explorer running |

my o2 was apparently a former basic node of MIT's athena network, with hostname "brave-little-toaster." it had all sorts of cool software on it, but it all required remote authentication, so yeah, torrenting the stock OS and demos and feeding it in via burned CDs to the one SCSI drive it would commune with, which was clearly a 4GB box drive that was designed to sit under a macOS 6 SE whatever when i sold it all off, those SCSI drives -- i had three -- commanded a premium, as whatever chipset they possessed had the dark magick capable of talking with a lot of fings. probably would have chatted with old akai just fine |

i saw Aphexes Synthi100 in the astronomy dept (fuck knows) of Cardiff University when i was little, it was pretty formative too.... my sister took me there, i had the day off school. It didn't work tho, very impressive looking - and smelling thing. |
