Masochism

I'm currently reading a book on the topic of Masochism by
the psychoanalyst Leon Wurmser.

His basic explanation of masochism is: Masochistic people
rather have painful relationships than no relationships at
all. And: masochistic people have been humiliated and shamed
by people (parents) they admire which causes a dillema:
either the masochists have to reject those they originally
admire and on whom they are dependent (which is like
choosing death), or they accept the judgement and see
themselves as somebody who deserves humiliation.

What's your take on masochism?

Masochism is a perfectly reasonable part of the human
experience. I'm reading 'the trouble with being born' by
E.M. Coiran and he flits between nihilism, masochism and
positivity about the human condition quite easily, with each
offering valid insight.

I think the problem is that masochism is automatically
associated with sexuality in modern times when it can be a
facet of your personality without it being related to sex in
anyway.

Ligotti basically says life itself is a masochistic pursuit
in 'the conspiracy against the human race'. Life is only
framed through the punishment of death, without that life
does not exist, and all our decision are in service of that
master.

honest to goodness, i was sort of thinking about this
earlier
about how you have to be a bit of a masochist to keep
pushing yourself to do something in order to get good at it,
and that a lot of 'high acheivers' are 'masochists' by this
definition, and often they can appear sadistic because they
are just expecting of other people what they expect of
themselves.

its true I reckon, some people who are the most accomplished
come across as utter bastards because they haven't spent
their time thinking about other peoples feelings or much of
anything else, usually when they are older they mellow out a
bit

Does she tour, as that’s better than any stand up routine
Amy Schumer has come out with?
