i have so many questions for fatboy slim ~
- what is your approach to panning?
- do you focus on particular frequencies as a rule, or just
mix as the track arises?
- when you said big beat has "the pop sensibilities of the
beatles," could you clarify? i understand the rest -- the
percussion of hip-hop, the energy of acid... but, beyond a
music teacher going on extensive rambles in college music
theory classes, i don't really understand the whole beatles
architecture
- do you just wild out on chorus and wah or is it
programmed? both? i mean the flangers are very clearly
deliberate; no question there
- can you please dig out your atari st again?

etc.

My IDM vote, if I can't have Aphex Twin or, errr, Fatboy
Slim, would have to go to X-Asp.

following the latest trends I reckon

HTH

a little. it's nice to see close-ups of his studio; until
now i'd never known what synths he used. you can tell, from
the brown stains, that he spends most of his time
programming the sampler or playing samples with the
keyboard. probably doesn't spend much time programming midi;
just jams it out on the controller. that it came out of
DJing, that he used to used to do the looping with 2x vinyl,
this makes sense for the feel of it.

but it's a short video, and there's not much in-depth
discussion of process. i mean, take panning -- there's a
lot, in there. he tends to stereo-separate certain parts; it
feels like it's how someone who'd spent time mixing rock
bands might do it... this is the default mode. then there's
breakdown mode, where he throws most of that out the window
and a bit of sound is scattered around the whole stereo
field. you know his record-scratchy breakdown... dunt, dunt,
dunta dunta dun dun dunnnn WHAM. as the sample-restart draws
down in size and increases in frequency, the panning
follows.

then there's this: how do you do a stereo mix that sounds
good in a club? i'm sure he did a lot of trial-and-error to
work this out.

i could say more, but that's bad enough. suffice to say i'm
sure norman cook would have a very interesting answer.
