The design looks thought out, maybe it's a prototype and they're doing this as stealth market research, to see if people treat it as a joke or want it. IMO four track cassette recorders are awesome, Fostex and Tascam used to sell tons of them, and if they put out one in a Volca size it would sell squillions. |

You can get plugins that sound like any of the volcas or better. Analog modelling is crazy now. But for some people it's having tangible gear that makes their nipples hard. |

Plugins are fine for 99% of situations, the listener doesn't know or care about the hardware just the audio aesthetic. When I use tape it's because the machine is fucked and the tape is fucked and I'm recording live something that will never be generated again so the imperfections and disasters are part of the composition. If there was a tape plugin that was really unpredictable and you could playback at half speed and it sounded exactly like slowed down tape I would use that. |

the tascam 414 can work wonders when you bounce tracks to it and use it as a quick and easy final 'once over'. i wonder if elektron analog heat would be a good substitute but can't exactly find the $$$$ to buy one and test it out. |

Yeah, I think it's definitely stealth market research. The design is too functional and polished, and not nearly funny enough, to be nothing more than an April Fools "joke". Or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part. It'd be great if they made them; I'd love to pick one up for tape looping with my modular. |

Plugins are fine for 99% of situations, the listener doesn't know or care about the hardware just the audio aesthetic. i disagree. i find working with plugins a very different experience than working with trackers, or with hardware, or playing bass in a jam session. there are times when i'll have exactly what i want in my head, and in that case, sure, it doesn't matter... ...but, usually, i'm more just starting with a mood, a few vague ideas. the environment in which i flesh it out, totally does shape the results... and vice versa, as i've learned to think "oh, no, that's a hardware track" or "i'd have to do that in a tracker." so, even when i do know what i want, plugins are not always the path of least resistance. cite that autechre quote about "a dialogue with the machines." plugins, trackers, hardware, jam bands all have slightly different dialects, and from there it's what feels like the best tool for the job |
