i've never actually played the games. afraid i've only played sonic but i did grow up on DOS an genesis noises. never played streets of rage, but i've been writing throwback 90s DOS tracker music mashed into jungle acid for months now, and forgive me if finding this soundtrack set my brain on fire in a very charming way |

i didn't have a genesis. i remember it was a huge thing when i got an NES when i was six, but past that, my parents were not approving of the video games. computers were moreso, so i was into computer gaming after the NES was obsolete. the only other console i got growing up was an N64. shadows of the empire was great |

yeah I didn't have a genesis, but they were ubiquitous, as was the SNES so I played the round friends houses occasionally, I really wanted one, a mega drive as they were called over here, eventually got a SNES but I probably should have got a mega drive |

i eventually ebayed all my old nintendo', but hooked them up and played again properly, recorded video, before doing so. i was struck by the utterly responsive feel of the joystick playing through shadows of the empire again. kind of absurd given it's a computer video system, but i have to say, it had a real analog feel to it. the way the shuttle responded in the opening hoth level |

i suppose the arcade ideal is a moment of aphasia where you're not sure if you're you or you're the game. all the shiny interfaces these days are full of flash and latency and you don't feel you're there as much despite the superior gfx |

yes modern games really are a different experience, I don't get the feeling of immediate fun, you have to sit through endless cut scenes, if I wanted to be passive id watch a movie, I guess sometimes I enjoy that too but gaming in large is much different than it was |

talking out of my behind, here, like always, butt n64 was a very dedicated system. 100% focus on the game. control input, touching the buttons or the joystick, would immediately interrupt whatever the fuck the console was doing, by design. user input -- king. response -- king. now, controllers are generic "usb devices" and they have to wait in line for a whole queue of bullshit like authenticating your xbox live account |

cos it was cartridge it was immediate, yes I don't like all those extraneous menus you get now with consoles, all I want is setting, I still think Mario 64 is probably the best pure game ever made, even if it might not be my particular favourite |

i found the input the mario 64 janky and frustrating. it was almost too open-ended. too twitchy and random. like a misbehaving sh101 nowadays, a console is expected to run a whole host of bullshit. you push the (tm) button, and the microplaysoft menu pops up with universal options. that fucking menu has ruined the feel of games. forcing the console to keep up with facebook friends and status alerts moves it from a pure gaming machine to a multitasking PC, and why ever buy a console instead of a PC? consoles are locked-down shite, at least with a PC i have options |

yeah technological convergence I guess, I guess that's why I really love messing around on emulators, although certain ones can be a hassle to set up, its just general much more of a pure gaming experience |

Ah the memories. Hearing shinobi again was marvellous. Makes me think of all the good times with Strider and Earthworm Jim, gosh even Aladdin. Megadrive also had the better shoot them ups compared to the snes. Been playing super castlevania 4, donkey kong country, and super Metroid lately and the music is wonderful in all three. Great atmosphere. |

i only had the first streets (until emulators later on) but i can still hum a few of the tunes, must have made an impression. i think i like best, nice throbbing bassline |
