Sounds Never Seen

Hey guys,

I'm trying to find interesting stuff that is (somehow)
played live or meant to be experienced live (not on your
usual stereo system) and has interesting approaches to
sounddesign

especially in recent times of nostalgia where the timbre
evokes pictures in your mind of old, dusty video games you
found in your uncles basement or it simply sounds like 90s
rave made by russian glue sniffers, played on a hifi system
on the Enterprise from Star Trek… whatever. I'm talking
about stuff like Oneohtrix Point Never, who has a very
artistic and definitely interesting approach to showing off
archives of ethno synth presets he found on his dads old
Juno 60 synth, or Lorenzo Senni who was so smart to buy a
JV-1080 before even Legowelt was praising it (both Roland
synths, both on Warp – conspiracy anyone?)

So, nowadays there are Autechre (still) who showed some nice
Max/MSP Faltungshall tricks on their last tour. On the other
side good ol rich fell in love with the guy from Cirklon and
never touched Metasynth again… Which is great, don't get
me wrong. But I'm hungry for some fresh sounds. Maybe I'm
just getting old and my ears are tired. But no, there must
be some squelchy new additive synth tricks or concatenative,
physical modeling burps

any ideas? and don't come with Holly Herndon

like
and
opdsds
maybe

I think there is not much to add, even the stuff I suggested
like Gabor Lazar, for example. He sounds a little bit like
Aphex Twin's Mathematical Equation played in a loop in the
length of a whole album. And Pedder Mannerfelt rocks the EMS
Synth A, a Synth older than himself.

I remember reading an interview where Aphex was praising
Ceephax for making 90s acid. It was after 2000, what I would
call the golden age of IDM where it was a new thing, when
people played live with Laptops. For the last 5 years,
Laptops are equipped with 16 GB of Ram. That has never
happened before. New evolvement in Consumer electronics is
important for creating new… things

it will take someone coming up with a radical new style and
everyone copying them for the next 15 years, I suppose its
like a coal face, what is their left to mine, it doesn't
feel like much but we cant know what we cant see

living a simulation ?

since mid 90s things have regurgitated quicker and quicker
and recycled, we are living in a Philip k dick novel,

Its weird how people are making music of a degraded
collective memory of what it was like to live 25 years ago,
its kind of sinister now ive watched that video

classes and you wake up and you realise where you were, not
at home, very bizarre feeling

seeing sounds is called synaesthesia and i could rable about
this all day.

offline RussellDust on 2018-06-09 18:23 [#02553885]

It’s association really, more than “seeing” sounds.
You can’t see sounds but you can associate images to them,
and I mean radically and sometimes automatically
(synaesthesia), colours and shapes come automatically
attached to a sound. Same goes with taste etc, but your not
hearing taste, or seeing it. It’s an association. I’ve
found that people with this condition are quite cocky about
it. Fun observation.

i know a chiptune musician who more or less has an
oscilloscope in his brain. very consistant, reliable visual
response. i told him i was jealous. he replied, "oh, i wish
i could switch it off, sometimes. it can be annoying."

that's quite nice, i'd like to hear it on better headphones
or a good system. i was a bit sceptical until about 4 min
in, thought it sounded like a richard devine max/msp
wankfest but the quieter it got the more i liked it. still,
it's hardly groundbreaking

Can also hear CDP on MikeD & PeterG 'Virtual Farmer', and
aphex stuff from turn of the century... I suppose it's worth
mentioning because ->That type of thing is not at all
overused in stuff at all yet as far as i can hear -> it is
old old software full of lots of work that should be
preserved and used by people and is open source now too ->

Alright i'm gonna be a bit negative here:
I've seen ppl from academic music backgrounds do live laptop
stuff where they've clearly been enabled by seeing stuff
like that Tudor vid, but honestly it's a million fucking
miles away... Tudors the boss, ... like, can't they hear the
difference?

his rainforest project?

its more like a forrest full of sounding sculptures

LAZY_TITLE

i experimented with audio feedback and metal plates. and
build a hanging metal sculpture and a little patch in pure
data which created a sound environment that got louder when
people got quieter. i was also inspired by di scipios
audible ecosystems
