I can't begin to describe how cheered I was to see a muppet version of Yoda back on the screen instead of the breakdancing CGI abomination from the prequels. |

I didn't read any of the thread(s) because I hadn't seen it. this film is terrible on almost every level, this and prequels fail to understand that star wars wasn't about sleek effects or super seriousness, star wars was about goofy charm with a bit of a DIY aesthetic, with fun characters and throwaway quips. such a shame how disney mismanaged the franchise as if it was a marvel movie. |

I was looking forward to it - i enjoyed the force awakens, although I didn't enjoy rogue one at all, but I hoped that this film would be more like episode VII, which did have a bit of that lived-in feel, a bit of fun (despite han getting shafted) - daisy ridley's acting really seems to have worsened, bizarrely - in general the acting for many characters is so self-conscious... and the 'comedy'... oh god, it isn't a comedy yet it tries to crowbar in awful jokes and comedic filming touches way too much. It's like they've analysed the original trilogy then tried too hard to emulate certain elements from it, making it feel, if you'll excuse the pun, forced. |

To be honest Marlowe, you’re the only “regular” who didn’t post in my 10k thread so I hate you. I need to see it again but I really didn’t feel any of it was as bad as you say. I didn’t really think the Rey Ren think was great, but otherwise I had a nice time, alone, in the more or less empty cinema. To be truthful, I’m not that sensitive about it. I just thought it has been talked to death about here. I’m sorry you didn’t like it, and you’re not alone in saying stuff like “this film is terrible on almost every level”. |

just so you know I have read zero reviews of this film - the only review I heard was the mark kermode review on his radio show, so I haven't heard any of the negative comments you've obviously experienced. I could detail the many ways I disliked this film but I see it's been covered - just know I went into it wanting to like it, and that I'm not a die-hard star wars fan but I do have the bluray boxset and a LEGO AT-AT sitting proudly by my router. |

:P I dunno. I went in as a child and enjoyed myself. It’s staggering to see the differences of opinion. I read an article on differences of opinion between the public and press and this was second. Can’t rem the first. I accept your review as honest and unbiased. I’m just at a loss. I know a bad movie when I see one, so what is wrong with me? It can be that is just Star Wars, because I can’t watch the prequels. |

Yes I re-watched those recently as it goes - these guys are always insightful; even when I don't agree with their overall opinions of a film I usually can't fault their intelligence and skill at film criticism. I need to finish season one of Star Trek Discovery so I can watch their season recap of it, too >_< |

I had a dream the other night that Carrie Fisher had written a sequel after Return of the Jedi, where Princess Leia comes to earth, looked like the 1970s, on her own, and lives with us and finds romance with someone who I think was played by Donald Sutherland - and I could see it all and it looked like a 70's film (which doesn't quite fit in with the filming chronology, but whatever) - and it was going to be a trilogy and ONLY at the end of the third one do we see a ship taking off from earth, presumably built using the knowledge that Leia had shared, in search of the Star Wars galaxy. It was quite sweet in a way, and infinitely better than THE LAST FUCKING JEDI. |
