Swedish journalist goes off on a submarine adventure with a
crazed loon. Ends up with her pussy sliced up and the rest
of her body in chopped into pieces. Jesus Christ. Why do
people do these things?

I think its not that easy. If people with such problems just
think its not horrible they would do it much more often. It
think most of them know its not right, its more that they
have an obsession

also, at war times when laws don't work these people just
have a fest. there was this guy in germany, who just after
the war ended put on a nazi uniform and went into a kz and
told the people that he came from berlin with the order to
kill all the people in the camp

they know it's not right but i don't think they can grasp it
emotionally. like you said if there were no laws or no price
to pay they would do it much more often. i think the
question is do they feel guilty about it and more
importantly is this guilt caused by social norms, is it
because it is considered wrong by society or do they
understand and feel why it is wrong to do such a thing to
someone? i might be wrong of course but it feels like they
are emotionally developed abnormally.

yes, i think their emotions must be hardwired differently.
it also always has a sexual aspect to it. i think when the
arousal becomes so big these people can't hold it. i also
think there must be others who have the same fantasies and
desires, but never act on them. its weird but at the same
time very human, that you can actually sexualise everything
u can imagine. so there are fetishes for everything. people
who get horny for any objects, behaviours, anything. people
fucking cars, shitting in their faces, getting horny when
they put on cotton knitwear you name it. some can life their
weird fetishes, others would break the law and/or hurt
others.

I actually find it in a way super-easy to imagine how
someone could committ the most horrific crimes, then shrug
it off and eat a hamburger ....

Bullying and wanting to dominate are pretty normal aspects
of everyday-life. Those psychopaths just seem to take this
everyday-behavior to the absolute extreme. Killing and
mutilating is just the most extreme case of realizing a
common desire for domination ... Let's put it like this. I'm
more shocked by the fact (and I actually am shocked by it)
that bullying is a super-normal aspect of everyday-life than
by the rare extreme case of psychopaths. ... I also work in
Marketing, and it's ridiculous that one of the most common
and effective way to make customers happy is to make them
feel superior in status. People love feeling superior and
killing somebody can definetly be a vehicle for feeling
superior to the victim.

i agree. what kind of childhood does these murderers go
through i can't imagine. there's got to be genetics involved
in it but i don't think genetics play as a big role as
experience does. genetics alone can't result in a human that
way i think.

right. grownups do act like bullying is not such a big deal
don't they? it certainly shows something is not going right.
you should act upon it there and then.

dahmer found things like the sound of snapping bone
immensely arousing, he fantasized about it for ages, and
when he finally acted -- the first time and many after -- he
was fucking blotto, drunk to the point of passing out and on
speed or something -- and wiki described a sense of "oh
shit, now what?" the morning after his first one. then there
was a pause, then it happened again, and again, and past a
certain point he probably figured he'd keep getting away
with it and stopped even bothering to fight that side of
himself. then he got caught

but, yeah, imprinting -- lorenz would shack newborn
ducklings up with ping-poing balls and the ducks would all
follow the ping-poing ball around like mommy after that
since whatever after they were born became imprinted as
mommy in the duck brain. when they got older, they would
attempt to mate with the ping-pong balls. so perhaps freud
was kinda right but not really

From an early age, Dahmer manifested an interest in
animals. Friends later recalled Dahmer initially collected
large insects, dragonflies, and butterflies, which he placed
inside jars. Later, Dahmer—occasionally accompanied by one
or more of his few friends—would collect animal carcasses
from the roadside; these animals Dahmer would dismember
either at home or in an expanse of woodland behind the
family home. According to one friend, Dahmer would dismember
these animals and store the parts in jars in the family's
wooden toolshed, always explaining that he was curious as to
how each animal "fitted together".[18] In one instance, he
is known to have impaled a dog's head upon a stake behind
his house.[19] Dahmer's fascination with dead animals might
have begun when, at the age of four, he noted his father
removing animal bones from beneath the family home.
According to Lionel Dahmer, his son was "oddly thrilled" by
the sound the bones made, and instantly developed a fixation
for playing with and collecting animal bones.

I admit that there's a distinction between using (a)
violence in order to achieve some other purpose and (b)
using violence for the sake of violence.

It just seems to me that using violence for the sake of
violence is a part of normal everyday-life. I don't find it
convincing that the regular bully is using violence in order
to achieve some other goal which he could in principle
achieve using non-violent means. It just doesn't stand out
as much in everyday-life because people are complex and are
driven by a mixture of motives. ...

Let's take the common practice of bullying the insecure fat
kid in class until they're depressed and damaged for years
or decades ... How can you analyze this situation without
claiming that it's at least partly driven by violence for
the sake of violence? ....

But now you're switching to a different level of analysis.
Now you're not talking about the personal motifs of the
indivudal, but of the impersonal forces of evolution
"acting" through him.... On that level of analysis even the
psychopath must have some function in evolution because
otherwise their psycho-genes would have left the gene-pool
long ago

what's the common explanation for the existence of
schizophrenia? especially given that it's significantly
hereditary and people with it don't tend to experience
reproductive success?

one theory is that it's simply the price we pay for having
half of a brain devoted to language.

there actually is a clinical test you can do to determine if
someone is a psychopath, but since it involves electric
shocks, it can't be done these days. essentially, people get
zapped, it hurts, then if they know another zap is coming,
they anticipate it, and you can read this through galvanic
skin response. psychopaths don't react like most people --
in fact, they don't react at all. unlike everyone else who
got zapped and now tenses up when another is coming, the
psychopaths have no cause/effect connection between the zap
and upcoming circumstances.

i don't have any stats for this, but i psychopaths tend to
get laid a lot more than schizophrenics.

Well, yes, you're right. From a Darwinian viewpoint there
doesn't necessarily need to be a direct evolutionary
advantage of phenomena such as schizophrenia or psychopathy
...they might in principe just be side-effects of of genes
which do fulfill a function.

... A friend of mine's schizophrenic and he always listen to
REALLY loud music to drown out the voices. It's not very
relaxing. ... Once I tried to be nice and play relaxing Bach
on the guitar for him. The next day he was back in the
mental hospital. Strange workings of nature :O

A friend of mine's schizophrenic and he likes to listen to
three different things at once -- youtube and pandora
playing music while he has something on netflix -- to drown
out the voices.

if you cut off sensory input -- isolation tank etc -- people
reliably begin to hallucinate. getting the sensory input
back -- opening up the tank lid -- immediately halts these
hallucinations.

seems straightforward enough that someone who has
hallucination problems at baseline might appreciate
stronger/more stimuli
