kicking myself forever for not just picking up the phone and
ringing him when i had the thought.

also kicking myself for not getting back with dana ballard,
a college professor who taught some of my classes on AI and
introduced me to concepts like context-addressable memory
and he was the most wicked funny little man ever, hilarious.
and i realized, all my shit -- the weasels, the p50 wave and
sensory gating being why nicotine helps schizophrenics, my
theory on the origin of life -- i owe everything to this
dude and he would have fucking loved it. and i thought of
emailing him and i didn't and then i find out he died
recently

he was also who introduced me to the work of roger penrose.
i wouldn't know i was walking quantum computer made of meat
without dana ballard.

[[ however -- 20 years ago, i wrote of penrose's quantum
theory of consciousness as absurd; violating parsimony. it
took me 20 fucking years to come around on that point, but
now i am utterly sold on it. the quantum matrix optimizes
the neural network [mammal brain] which evolved to optimize
blood flow [lizard brain] and blood flow is DIRECTING
RESOURCES shaped by the pressures of evolution. until
fluidics is too slow and we need electricity. then we've
maxed that out and quantum is the only way to evolve further
