I haven't yet seen Moon but I doubt it could be as big a disappointment as District 9 was.

Definately Space 1999.
Solaris only in Tarkovsky version. Alltogether Soviet (and some post-Soviet) sci-fi is the best.

As for the Tarkovsky original, it's really as good as a movie gets. Tarkovsky was the best, the saint of cinema.
Skip the Soderberg remake. Compared to Drexciyan Detroit, it's like Berghain techno shait.

After (Tarkovsky) Solaris, if you liked it, try Stalker, probably the densest movie ever made. It's also sci-fi in a way or two.

District 9 did disappoint me a little - it seemed to have the 'AFDA' style smeared all over it (acting and filming) - though i'm not sure if there is a connection. Was expecting a little more grit. But some of it is just undeniably cool. I liked Wikus, I guess that helps.
Haven't seen Moon yet - will do - with plenty of expectations!
besides that there are lots of good scifis out there. Just search sci-fi on here, you will find plenty mentioned.

a while ago i watched the Tarkovsky Solaris again and while it is definitely a solid film with great actors and good music, it looks terribly dated (worse than 2001) and has some completely skippable scenes imo. It really drags on at times.
This again reinforced my opinion that the Soderbergh interpretation (not remake) is vastly better on all fronts. Visuals, acting, emphasis on certain emotional aspects, pacing and score. It is a masterpiece and one of the most underrated films of all time.
That said, i massively enjoyed both district 9 as well as moon (the latter of which obviously borrows heavily from both Soderbergh's solaris and Kubrick's 2001).
*awaits wrath of the cinema purist-elitists* ;)

Yo there. I thought about it for a bit and this is the list I came up with:
2001 A Space Odyssey 2010 The Year We Make Contact Alien Aliens Back to the Future 1,2 and 3 Barbarella Queen of the Galaxy Blade Runner Bicentential Man Dune (Movie and Tv Series ) Contact The Day the Earth Stood Still (wowa I check theres a keaunu reeves remake)
E.T Flight of The Navigator The Fly The Forbidden Planet Ghostbusters 1 + 2 Jurassic Park Man who fell to earth Planet of the Apes Saga Solaris (Tarkovsky :P) Soylent Green THX 1138 The Time Machine (Both were good imo) Twelve Monkeys Videodrome and War games
there's more though

i watched moon today. i enjoyed it very much. same old questions raised again but since there is no bigger question, what is important is how you handle the question, which i believe is done very successfully. i give it a 4 out of 5

i've seen it twice and might watch it again.
i was joking about solaris in that list, i don't mind the soderbergh one, it had quite a nice look to it. i vaguely remember my favourite shot where clooney is in the streets or by a train or something which looked 'syndicate' game to me - he might have been wearing a trench coat. for a time i didn't feel a need to ever watch it again, although now i kind of do.

i've watched the both of em. what to think, it seems all very ahead of its time. solaris was incredible at the first 'listen', thought i was hallucinating when the horse made its first appearance. stalker has an impressive soundtrack too. it seems to me that all directors whose surname ends with -osky leave you with that kind of 'stuck at the end' feel or
