Anger can be deep inside. I bottled a lot of anger so when
it came out it was just bad news.

Btw, now i think about it, Daniel Pinchbeck and Alejandro
Jodorowsky are very interesting. And alive. They met for the
purpose of a documentary recently. Funny stuff i thought. At
one point Jodorowsky tells Pinchbeck to wear an item of
clothing from his dead father, dress up his wife with his
mum's clothes and fuck her. I think Freud came in his grave
at that point.

Yeah, I watched a bunch of Jodorowsky films. Holy Mountain
et al. Pretty good, but quite weird. Not as crazy as
Pink Flamingos though, haha! God bless John Waters. That
sample of 'this boys needs therapy' from the song by
Avalanches was from a film by John Waters too, called
Polyester.

I think Waters can thank Jodorowsky. Apparently he was
'pupil' of his.
Don't just see Jodorowsky as a movie maker though. He's done
so much stuff. I'd love to have him do my tarot cards one
day. He does it for free sometimes in this little cafe in
Paris.

And I am listening to Supreme Balloon by Matmos, which is a
very warm 24 minute track too, so only adds to the mood.

Shit, really? Man, you're a right little fountain of
knowledge you, ent yah? :)

That's a great image- Jodorowsky doing tarot for free in a
little cafe in Paris. Kinda gives you faith that there is
still some good left in this crazy old world.

And I didn't realise Water was a student of his! That's cool
stuff- makes sense too, as they are both pioneers indeed!
Have you seen Pink Flamingos?

"Pink Flamingos"

Yes but i'd like to see it again. I don't think i was in the
mood and it was ages ago. Can't forget the ending though. He
went a bit lightweight after that didn't he?

Fuck! Scrotal wedgie! Ah, there we go.

Yeah, Gummo is naturalistic, like a documentary yet kinda
subtly magical as well.

I can't remember if it was here that I was reading about his
new film, but someone somewhere said that they heard it was
supposed to have a soundtrack by Sigur Ros, which they
thought was a bad thing. Maybe cos that would mean it would
have a bigger budget than the last and be a bit more
Hollywood orientated, I dunno.

I like Takashi Miike, Tod Solondz, and American Beauty. They
are some of most favouritest films. What about you?

Yeah, when you make a film that hardcore, you can only go
lightweight! XD

I think it was exactly the right film for the era. It could
never be done again, just wouldn't be allowed. I mean,
killing a chicken in a film would just not get aired
anywhere nowadays, lol. Let alone a chicken being killed in
a scene of rape, haha!

Anything by Herzog, Kubrick, Hitchcock, Korine, Lynch
instantly comes to mind... pretty normal i'd say.

One of the only films that i constantly remember when asked
my favourite films is Jacob's Ladder.

I really like Solondz. Happiness was great.

Have you seen Julien Donkey-boy. I'm such a Herzog fanboy
it's a joy to watch him act.

Wow, the trailer was really peculiar!

The synopsis makes it sound like something I would
definitely enjoy, though!

My e-mail is traxt01@gmailDOTcom, would you be so kind as to
send me a list of interesting films, the like of which we
been discussing?

I bought The Birds, but I never finished it, cos it was just
so darn boring for most of it... I wanna watch Psycho,
though. Amongst others, of course.

Have you seen anything by Takashi Miike? My faves aren't his
most famous ones, but his slightly older Yakuza ones,
particularly Ley Lines and Blues Harp Blues Harp is so
bloody beautiful. It has violence and stuff, but it is also
about friendship and relationships and it's got a great
ending. It is definitely in my top 3. With Happiness and
American beauty, I think.

seems like one of those dumb words that doesn't actually

The definition on Wiki is quite good, actually:

Spirituality is relating to, consisting of, or having the
nature of spirit; not tangible or material. Synonyms include
immaterialism, dualism, incorporeality and eternity.
Spirituality is associated with religion, deities, the
supernatural, and an afterlife, although the decline of
organized religion in the West and the growth of secularism
has brought about a wider understanding of its nature.

I wouldn't say so, no.

But you can think what you like, fella. :)

"For some, spirituality includes introspection, and the
development of an individual's inner life through practices
such as meditation, prayer and contemplation. Some modern
religions also see spirituality in everything: see pantheism
and neo-Pantheism. In a similar vein, Religious Naturalism
has a spiritual attitude towards the awe, majesty and
mystery it sees in the natural world."

Do you still think it means nothing?

It is a more flexible version of religion and/ or
philosophy, unique to the individual, which changes over
time.

Hum, still means nothing.

There is nothing unique to an individual and everything
changes over time.

Contemplation is contemplation, introspection is
introspection. meditation and prayer are gimmicks.

I maintain that "spirituality" is one of the most
nonsensical words in the english dictionary.

I'd like to think I have my own spirituality..
In one sense it's a very down to earth spirituality, I like
to enjoy normal stuff that we do everyday, but I also like
to use my imagination and think about far out stuff, through
the help of music and movies etc.

In my case, spirituality just means an awareness of what's
around me, inside me, and a general emotional/thoughtful
view of "everything"

If you mean spirituality in terms of healing, secret chakras
and gods etc then no, that's not for me.
I just use what I have been given and I always try to
appreciate what a situation means, and what something means
to me.
I don't just stroll through life without contemplating how
things are.

In your case, philosophical would probably be a more
appropriate description of you than spiritual.

To me spiritual, spiritualism etc. is like some chic made up
hippie word from the seventies, lumped in with meditation,
karma and all that other nonsensical bollocks that doesn't
mean anything.

These terms are perversions, just like meditation is a
complete perversion of meditate, which is a very correct and
insightful word.

I completely disagree.

If you didn't even know how it was defined in the first
place, you not liking it, this thing you don't understand,
doesn't hold much sway with me.

I don't mean this is a hostile or aggressive way and I'm not
saying you're stupid or anything, cos you're obviously very
intelligent. It's just my opinion. Maybe one day I'll agree
with you.

cx's defintion of spirituality is good, I think. It is a
subjective thing, therefore hard to define. Maybe that's why
you don't like the idea of it. If you just think of it as
'of the spirit', a way of dealing with the spirit of things,
abstract ideas of any kind, maybe that'll help. Or maybe you
think that's bollocks too, I dunno.

spiritual, spiritualism

These things are entirely different:

Spiritualism is a monotheistic belief system or religion,
postulating a belief in God, but the distinguishing feature
is belief that spirits of the dead can be contacted, either
by individuals or by gifted or trained "mediums", who can
provide information about the afterlife.

This is far more specific than spirituality.

In relation to religion, spirituality is the practice, while
religion is the theory.

Also, with spirituality, "faith becomes more personal, less
dogmatic, more open to experimentation, and is based upon
personal experience."

...which kinda does sound a bit like drug taking of the 60s.
TBH, I can't see anything which says you can't reach a
spiritual goal by using drugs. Maybe you would reach some
kind of 'temporary enlightenment', but then when you come
down, you'd lost it, so it's more like faux spiritualism. I
suppose that kind of thing would be based on experience,
though.

If it's not really happening, I wouldn't really say it's an
'experience', per se. And with drugs, what you see isn't
really there in reality, so drugs aren't associated with
spirituality and nothing to do with "hippy chic".

Exactly.

You've obviously never, ever tried meditation (in the true,
non-fashionable word which means nothing sense), if you
think it is bollocks. Maybe it doesn't work as well for you
as for others, but it will have an instant effect if you try
it, I 100% guarantee. You obviously have no idea what it
actually is.
