Incidentally I should note that I will be getting student
discount plus another hundred quid off so a standard Macbook
would be 600 quid.

so, the mac will be fine.

Mostly Max/MSP and listening to music with a windows
partition with fwuity lewps on it to make my gay disco hits.
I'd like to get back in to using logic as its what we use at
work but it's so fucking expensive.

just surf to anandtech and read for yourself.

depending on what you're going to do, i'd say: either go
cheap and buy a netbook, or if anything, avoid vista as the
plague and buy a mac. the extra mac $ are worth it, imo

First of all, Macintosh can be rearranged to spell Mac Shit,
No?

Windows can be rearranged to spell nothing coherent.

Ubuntu is a fucked up word anyway

Thinkpad, Dink-Path

Mac just is for pimps, plus they're metallic. Who would
refuse a metallic exterior?

If you don't choose mac there must be something wrong about
your brain size, i bet.

Dear XLTre

because they've been conditioned to use macs either from the
90s (if they're established) or from college/uni if they've
just started out (because thats what most campus' train
with, mainly because a lot of students come from
non-computer backgrounds and struggle with pcs)

back in the 90s, macs had the clear advantage when it came
to design related endeavours, due to better color profiling
and a few other features. photoshop also started life
exclusively on the mac and came to windows later.

today, there is absolutely ZERO difference between the suite
on both platforms. i work in the industry myself and have
used both macs and pc's extensively for design work. people
mostly prefer to use what they were trained/taught with
initially, which is why macs still have a big share of the
design market. in reality, it doesn't matter what platform
you use.

You are absolutely right! the myth that macs are better for
design havnt been true since the late mid 90's.

In fact the 3 largest design firms in the world have
switched to PC in the past 7 years.

I would say if you're getting a laptop probably get a mac
tbh. PC laptops are flakey horrible things. Dislike them -
they usually last around 2.5 years max in my experience. I
dont even have a mac, but i know the laptops are designed to
last.

But! I say desktops arent dead! I got a shitty laptop for my
shitty laptop tasks, and I built a powerhouse PC for my
proper tasks.

If you know how to look after a windows machine, and you
built it well with good components, and you dont fill it
full of warez crap then it will be good times!

Also i think microsoft may be onto something with windows 7.

decided. I think I have to get a mac for logic. It's what I
teach to the kiddies meaning I can do lesson prep etc at
home.

Hope you've enjoyed this update.

for the price? not worth it.

the burner of my - maybe - 4 years old macbook pro fucked up
after 13 months, of course the warranty was covering one
year only. same thing happened with the old eMac so you
better extend the warranty or you can get extremely lucky.
apart from this it's a great comp, it works better with a gf
though

Apparently student discount gets you an extended 3 year

Winter is such a shitty time of year really. It's great for
a short while then you just think 'for fucks sake would it
be too much to ask to not have to wear 4 layers and take a
bloody raincoat where ever I go?'.

It's rubbish really.

Get a Mac - I've had a MacBook for about a month now and I'm
seriously doubting whether I'll ever buy anything MicroSoft
computing-wise ever again. Everything's generally much
better - efficiency, appearance, usability.

That's the only problem with them though - they'll put you
off everything else on the market.

try to wait till the end of the month. at the end of january
apple will show off his new line (probably with tablet) and
current models will probably be somewhat cheaper (generally
speaking: the new models will either be faster & cheaper, or
just faster). so, just hold your chocolate coins in your
pocket for a couple weeks.

The funny thing is that apple don't know much about making
per se, as they subcontract out all the manufacturing to
China, etc.

That statement is quite clever because it implies that their
stuff is expensive and not junk, when in fact the hardware
is pretty standard PC junk (albeit expensive)

To give apple their dues, the software is quite nice, but
unlike windows, they've had it easy...

* They didn't have a MASSIVE install base to piss off when
breaking legacy compatibility with os9 -> osx switch.

* They only have to support a tiny number of hardware
configurations.

* Silly fanboys will do all the advertising and hype for
them.

Apropos, Nokia are suing apple for mobile technology used in
the Ifone. My money's on Nokia to win either via cross
licensing or slap fight in court. I've read quite a bit
about this and the interesting thing to come across is that
apple is a big bag of hot air. Although they may have a
massive market capitalisation, apple investors don't get any
dividends. It's all based on hype and future prospects.
If I had put money into a successful mature company, I would
be expecting some dividends... those turtle neck jumpers and
man bags don't buy themselves!

I bought a mac 4 months ago. Took me a month to realize how
much I hated the thing, another 3 months to find someone who
wasn't totally going to gouge me in resale, ended up loosing
$500 in the deal.

If you are going to buy a mac, maybe start off setting
yourself up with a hackintosh box or something.

not to mention the fact that Nokia are most probably legally
in the right here, as they hold copyright to a LOT of stuff.
Nokia have been in the mobile phone industry since 1984.
Apple has been in the mobile phone game since, what...2007?

The resale value if you are selling two years later is good.
But not if you are selling right away.
