Easily the best thing about my trip to Greece was the noise these insects made. I can't remember the name well enough to spell it but they're basically very large grasshopper type things.
The main thing that was so cool about the noise was that they seemed to have a rhythm and tune that varied unlike grasshoppers which is fairly constant. The best time was driving fast in a cab on winding mountain roads that had the noise of these insects on either side of the road. Oh for a DAT recorder and 2 good mics....

They were sooo loud. I'm not exaggerating, they literally drowned out the music in one remote bar I went to.
The best bit of the holiday was my gf showing me these weird isolated clay "oscilloscope like" clay cliffs that were really alien with these insects making their strange noise and the noise of the tide in the distance. Very otherworldy, could be used as a set for a film or doctor who episode.

Yep, I thought you'd know the things I meant :)
I really liked the variety of species of ants there too. There are very small "fat" ones as well as incredibly spindly "lanky" ones.
Woofer: Zante AKA Zakynthos, unfortunately I was staying in the hole that is lagana (if you know zante), but I got out to some of the remote areas of the island which was nice.

Probably the funniest part of my holiday was when I was snorkelling and got cramp due a combination of not having worn fins in ages and diving to deep/frequently. I shouted "I've got cramp!" to my girlfriedn who was about 50m away and the only person in the area who shouted back "Cool!". Eventually after persistant shouting she swam over and helped me to shore. It turned out that she had thought I'd said "I've got crabs" and assumed that I could see hermit crabs.
Quite scary at the time, but amusing in retrospect :)

Had something vaguely similar happen to me when we went to Tenerife when I was about 10....Got kinda sucked out to sea & could feel myself getting further n further out....kinda paniced & my survival instinct kicked in & I got myself back to shore...
but yeah, bloody scary....especially when you look around & realise there's no-one to help...
