kilkenny cats (kil-KEN-ee kats) noun
People who fight relentlessly till their end.
[From a pair of proverbial cats in Kilkenny who fought till only their tails
were left.] According to a story, some people in the town of Kilkenny in Ireland enjoyed
tying the tails of two cats and watching them fight till only their tales were left behind. Most likely the story is a parable of a contest between Kilkenny and Irishtown, two municipalities which fought about their boundaries till little
more than their tails were left. Here is a popular limerick (another word that takes its origins from the name of an Irish town) about the cats:
"There wanst was two cats of Kilkenny Each cat thought there was one cat too many So they fought and they fit And they scratched and they bit 'Til instead of two cats there weren't any."
OUCH poor kitty kots......but an interesting word and interesting origins. wonder if we have any MB member from Kilkenny?

Those poor cats were probably lucky, compared to what happened to their forerunners during the Black Plague...

No. Cats were considered instrument of...
THE DEVIL (tm)!
So cats were generally killed in great quantities, especially in urban areas.
When mice came with plague germs, there weren't any predators to get between them and a comfortable life in those dirty, filthy cities.
The rats boomed, as did their fleas...
as did the Black Plague, wiping out a 1/3 of Europe in the late 14th century.
And now you know the rest of the story...
Good day!

i'll be putting up a whole website of my "family" soon :)
my little black one is trying to get into trouble all the time :)
today she insisted going in the shower with me, but she really doesn't understand that she'll get all wet there. so she freaked totally and started rampaging around the house, and in result she bumped with one of the guys, went meowwww very sadly and sulked for an hour. it really isn't her day.

Kilkenny is certainly worth a visit if you're traveling in that part of Ireland. Sadly the local beer is not quite as good as it used to be!

Space Ghost: (with Irish accent) This one's for me mum. (invisos to center stage, with spotlight, and begins to sing):
It seems like only yesterday, I sailed from out of Cork. A wanderer from old Erin's Isle, I landed in New York. There wasn't a soul to greet me there, A stranger on your shore. But Irish luck was with me here, And riches came galore. And now I'm going back again To dear old Erin's Isle. My friends will meet me on the pier And greet me with a smile. Their faces I've almost forgot, I've been so long away. But me mother will introduce them all, And this to me she'll say. Shake hands with your Uncle Mike, me boy, And here's your sister Kate. And there's the girl you used to swing Down by the garden gate. Shake hands with all of the neighbors, And kiss the colleens all, You're as welcome as the flowers in May In dear old Donegal.
Meet...(chorus) Brannigan Fannigan Milligan Gilligan Duffey MacCuffey Mallochy Malone Rafferty Lafferty Donnelly Connelly Dooley O'Hooley Muldoony Mahone Hadigan Cadigan Lannihan Flannihan Fagan O'Hagan O'Houlihan Flynn Shannahan Mannahan Fogarty Hogarty Kelley O'Kelley MacGuiness Magin (repeat chorus)

I love cats.. and cats love me!
I can walk into any room, I see the cat, the cat sees me, we practically run towards each other.
I kid you not. I have cat-magnetism.
