ok, can someone explain to me in simple terms what DSP is and what it does? |

digital signal processor - basically is what it sounds like I think, a chip for processing signals for sound...you get them in some synths (like nord modular) and soundcards (like the pulsars) meaning no cpu power is used up |

not just that, software is specially made for the hardware and they can work together to get much better quality sounds than merely software on a pc. I've got a soundcard with some dsp and the reverbs that come with it are much better than most VST's ones. However you end up spending more, and its all deciding whether its worth it |

the cpu in your computer is a dsp. any fucking computer with a chip in which can perform calculations on long streams of data is a dsp (ie. any fucking computer around - my psion palmtop is a dsp). ALL desktop computers these days are faster than outboard dsp chips (xcept perhaps Kyma - no experience for me so i dont know), you have a dsp chip on your soundcard unless you have a really old one. Dsp is fucking everything - it aint just those wooshy fx used as bridges on IDM records, its *everything* audible which comes out of a computer. |

surely its all down to how powerful the dsp chips are though? like the EMU chip on the SB Live is far less powerful than a SHARC chip on a creamware card also, DSP chips on audio hardware are specifically designed to do that job |

my point was that: dsp doesnt necessarily have to be realtime, and it doesnt have to be on a chip. It doesnt even have to have anything to do with audio - it could be video graphics, or a digitized set of temperature readings from a north pole research laboratory. I just so much hate it when people go about a song "ooh he/she uses a bit of dsp there!" or whatever. |
