aphex is pronounced like 'effects', cos aphex systems build effects. RDJ ripped the name off them, because he had some aphex effects when he started making electronic music. The aphex Big Bottom effect give a warmth and depth to any recorded material.
ok?

the standard line:
According to the February 13, 1993 issue of NME:
"Richard came across the word by accident, using the 'A' in Aphex for the acid element in his sound, and the 'ph' as the pH value of acid. He hadn't even heard of an Aural Exciter until he'd had a few records out. He is, let's face it, the last person who'd name himself after a piece of gear made by somebody else: he was constructing his own synthesisers at 13."
Take with grain of salt, like any information about RDJ.

everyone I know pronounces "Aphex" as in aphex systems AY-FEX NOT EF-ECTS. It doesn't even *look* like EFFECTS. Where's the 'T' to or do we use our imagination? I heard it was really pronounced 'waterbead'. afx also acknowledges their copyright of the word on some of his releases.

listen to all the aphex twin songs where "aphex"/"afx" is spoken or sung. IT IS NOT "EFFECTS"!
